A Wellesley College graduate\, she also holds a master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She was a Lecturer at Harvard Medical School and a Fellow at other universities\, including Harvard and MIT. She has won more than fifty journalism awards\, including a George Foster Peabody Award. She lives outside of Boston.

Her writing has appeared in Science\, Orion\, Necessary fiction\, and Obsidian\, among other publications. Her book of lyric essays inspired by fungi\, Fearless\, Sleepless\, Deathless: What Fungi Taught Me about Nourishment\, Poison\, Ecology\, Hidden Histories\, Zombies\, and Black Survival was shortlisted for the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature\, is a finalist for the Massachusetts Book Award\, and was the recipient of the Don Kissel Prize for Nonfiction.
