SUMMARY:Ukulele Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Want to try an instrument that is fun and relatively easy to play? Learn the fundamentals of ukulele playing with Julie Stepanek Murray! This three part series will cover the basics (tuning\, fretting\, strumming\, and reading chord diagrams) as well as providing the opportunity to ask questions and to play fun and easy songs. If you have your own ukulele (or borrow one of the Library’s)\, no need to register in advance – just show up! \nIf you want to use one of Julie’s ukuleles\, please register on the Library’s website. When you sign up\, you are registering for all three sessions. Please note that Julie’s instruments are available during the workshops but need to be returned to Julie at the end of each session and cannot be taken home.

No experience necessary. This series is geared towards adults. \nWe recommend attending all three sessions of this workshop since each workshop will build on the previous one. But if you already know a few basics or feel confident that you can catch up\, you’re welcome to join the later sessions. \nYou can either bring a ukulele to the workshop or register to use one of Julie’s.

SUMMARY:Newton Family Singers Presents Music of R.E.M. and the Indigo Girls!
DESCRIPTION:This season we’re celebrating the music of R.E.M. and Indigo Girls\, two decade-defining bands who came out of Athens\, Georgia. \nFun fact about Indigo Girls and R.E.M.: the trajectory of the Indigo Girls’ career mimics the path carved by R.E.M.\, often passing through the exact same physical spaces. Both bands’ spiritual home became the Athens clubs. The 40 Watt Club stands out as the central hub of their shared history. Even decades later\, in December 2022\, the Indigo Girls returned to the 40 Watt to perform at the 40th Anniversary celebration of R.E.M.’s Chronic Town EP\, cementing the venue as a historical monument to their shared lineage. Keep your eyes open around town for our flyer\, and see if you can pick out “40 Watt” imagery. \nMark your calendars: Saturday\, May 9 @ 4:00 PM. This season we’re performing at Newton Community Stage at the Lincoln-Eliot School\, 15 Walnut Park\, Newton. \nAdult tickets are $15 if purchased before May 2nd and $20 if purchased after May 2nd or at the door. Kids’ tickets (12 and under) are always $15. Get yours at https://www.newtonfamilysingers.org/events.html.
