SUMMARY:Ty Burr's Movie Club: The Holdovers
DESCRIPTION:From acclaimed director Alexander Payne\, THE HOLDOVERS follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually\, he forms an unlikely bond with one of them — a damaged\, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) — and with the school’s head cook\, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da’Vine Joy Randolph). \nTY BURR’S MOVIE CLUB is hosted by the nationally recognized film critic Ty Burr. \nEach month Ty presents and discusses one of his favorite films with the audience. His selections span the spectrum from classics that have stood the test of time to contemporary films that merit a second viewing.

SUMMARY:Save Soil Social Justice Speaker Lunch
DESCRIPTION:FUUSN’s Social Justice Speakers Task Force invites you to a discussion with Greg Maslowe\, the Manager of the Newton Community Farm\, and Prathyusha Dasari\, from Save Soil\, on Sunday\, March 1\, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at FUUSN\, Alliance Room -1326 Washington Street\, West Newton\, MA 02465.\nNewton Community Farm has been farmed continuously for over 350 years. Despite this long history of agricultural use\, the farm’s soil is a thriving biome with high levels of organic matter. Our goal\, as the current users of this land\, is to ensure that it will remain fertile and productive for future generations and a beneficial habitat for the abundant more-than-human life in this area. What techniques does NCF use to ensure these goals? How do these relate to contemporary notions such as regenerative agriculture? And what can you do to enhance the soil health of your own home or garden?\nPrathyusha Dasari\, a volunteer with the Save Soil movement\, will introduce this global initiative dedicated to addressing the growing soil crisis. Save Soil unites people around the world to advocate for soil health and supports leaders of all nations in advancing policies that increase organic matter in agricultural soils. Agricultural soil degradation contributes to an estimated 40% of global warming\, and by 2045\, we may face 40% less food to sustain a projected population of 9.2 billion people. What is the current state of soil worldwide? What has Save Soil accomplished so far—and what can you do to help? SaveSoil.org\nA light lunch will be served.\nThe Social Justice Speakers Task Force is part of FUUSN’s Social Justice Council\, which coordinates our congregation’s efforts to put faith into action through social justice work in our communities and beyond. SUMMARY:Bringing it Home with Brescianello: Concerti a tre from the Stuttgart Court
DESCRIPTION:Newton Baroque presents music of the Stuttgart Court.\nGiuseppe Antonio Brescianello (ca. 1690 to 1758) grew up in Bologna and spent much of his career at the courts of Munich and Stuttgart. His Concerti a tre are richly imaginative trio sonatas that combine the intimacy of chamber music with the brilliance of concerto-style violin writing. Each work functions like a concerto for two violins\, unfolding without the support of a full orchestra. \nLike many Italian musicians who were recruited to German courts in the eighteenth century\, Brescianello is not widely known today. In his own time\, however\, he was highly respected\, particularly for his violin concertos. These works offer a vivid glimpse into the cosmopolitan musical life of the German courts and showcase a distinctive voice at the crossroads of Italian virtuosity and German refinement. \nMore information available at https://www.newtonbaroque.org/

SUMMARY:The US\, Irish America\, & the Irish Peace Process: Preliminary Reflections\, Observations & Recollections
DESCRIPTION:If the realist theories of international relations were correct\, there would have been little or no sustained U.S. governmental involvement in the Irish peace process in the 1990s and beyond. Yet history tells a different story. What explains the enduring role of Irish America in shaping U.S. policy toward Irish nationalism\, particularly in relation to Northern Ireland? How has that influence evolved over time\, and what does the future hold? Is the familiar narrative of a “vanishing” Irish and Irish-American presence in U.S. politics truly plausible? \nIreland’s relationship with the United States has long rested on ancestral ties\, shared democratic values\, and the influence of a powerful diaspora. Economic connections between the two counties are substantial\, and U.S. political and economic support has been critical in securing and sustaining peace in Northern Ireland. \nIn this Irish Institute lecture\, Brendan O’Leary\, Lauder Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania\, examines the political relationships linking Ireland\, Irish America\, and the United States\, with particular attention to the Northern Ireland peace process and the sources of sustained American engagement. All are welcome\, but registration is required.

SUMMARY:Newton History Series: The Troubled History of Race and Public Education in Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:Many of us learn about school desegregation in the context of the mid-twentieth-century South: Brown v. Board of Education\, Ruby Bridges\, and the Little Rock Nine. Yet a century before that\, young Black women in Massachusetts led the fight for equal school rights—the right of all to a quality education on an equal basis. This lecture examines the lives of young Black women whose activism reshaped public education in the Bay State. Exploring this history is vital\, not only to spotlight the long struggle for Black educational justice\, but also to remind us of our collective obligation to democratize public schools today. \nAbout the speaker: Kabria Baumgartner is an award-winning historian who has worked with numerous historical organizations. In 2021\, she co-founded the award-winning Newburyport Black History Initiative (NBHI)\, an organization that highlights and incorporates Black history into the public landscape in downtown Newburyport. In 2019\, she published her first academic book\, In Pursuit of Knowledge: Black Women and Educational Activism in Antebellum America\, which tells the story of young Black women who fought to democratize public education in the nineteenth-century North. She is Dean’s Associate Professor of History and Africana Studies at Northeastern University. \nThis program is part of the Newton History Series\, co-sponsored by Historic Newton and the Newton Free Library. \nRegistration is encouraged\, and you’ll get a reminder if you sign up. Walk-ins are also welcome.

SUMMARY:Social Justice Speaker Lunch
DESCRIPTION:FUUSN’s Social Justice Speakers Task Force is holding a discussion with Christine Nguyen\, Jefferson Hussey\, and Renee Hamilton\, volunteer organizers with Eastern Service Workers Association (ESWA). ESWA is an all-volunteer association of low-paid service workers and allies uniting to end poverty conditions in our communities by addressing their root causes. You will hear how local small businesses\, students\, professionals\, congregations and other concerned residents support this work. A complementary light lunch will be served.
