DESCRIPTION:If the realist theories of international relations were correct\, there would have been little or no sustained U.S. governmental involvement in the Irish peace process in the 1990s and beyond. Yet history tells a different story. What explains the enduring role of Irish America in shaping U.S. policy toward Irish nationalism\, particularly in relation to Northern Ireland? How has that influence evolved over time\, and what does the future hold? Is the familiar narrative of a “vanishing” Irish and Irish-American presence in U.S. politics truly plausible? \nIreland’s relationship with the United States has long rested on ancestral ties\, shared democratic values\, and the influence of a powerful diaspora. Economic connections between the two counties are substantial\, and U.S. political and economic support has been critical in securing and sustaining peace in Northern Ireland. \nIn this Irish Institute lecture\, Brendan O’Leary\, Lauder Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania\, examines the political relationships linking Ireland\, Irish America\, and the United States\, with particular attention to the Northern Ireland peace process and the sources of sustained American engagement. SUMMARY:Newton History Series: The Troubled History of Race and Public Education in Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:Many of us learn about school desegregation in the context of the mid-twentieth-century South: Brown v. Board of Education\, Ruby Bridges\, and the Little Rock Nine. Yet a century before that\, young Black women in Massachusetts led the fight for equal school rights—the right of all to a quality education on an equal basis. This lecture examines the lives of young Black women whose activism reshaped public education in the Bay State. Exploring this history is vital\, not only to spotlight the long struggle for Black educational justice\, but also to remind us of our collective obligation to democratize public schools today. \nAbout the speaker: Kabria Baumgartner is an award-winning historian who has worked with numerous historical organizations. In 2021\, she co-founded the award-winning Newburyport Black History Initiative (NBHI)\, an organization that highlights and incorporates Black history into the public landscape in downtown Newburyport. In 2019\, she published her first academic book\, In Pursuit of Knowledge: Black Women and Educational Activism in Antebellum America\, which tells the story of young Black women who fought to democratize public education in the nineteenth-century North. She is Dean’s Associate Professor of History and Africana Studies at Northeastern University. \nThis program is part of the Newton History Series\, co-sponsored by Historic Newton and the Newton Free Library. \nRegistration is encouraged\, and you’ll get a reminder if you sign up. DESCRIPTION:In an unprecedented attempt to heal centuries of racism and antisemitism\, and combat the rising racial and ethnic tension in their Brooklyn communities\, the largest reform synagogue and the oldest black Baptist Church attempt to unite their congregations and bring about peace\, by becoming family. Shot over five years by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Ondi Timoner\, ALL GOD’S CHILDREN follows her sister\, activist Rabbi Rachel Timoner\, and her Congregation Beth Elohim’s partnership with Reverend Dr. Robert Waterman of Antioch Baptist Church as their faith is put to the test\, and both congregations struggle not to let their differences drive them apart. Though it’s a fraught partnership\, they refuse to walk away\, no matter how hard it gets\, and ultimately emerge with an inspiring model for how other communities might build bridges across religious\, economic and class divides to foster enduring\, powerful partnerships. \nPANEL DISCUSSION FOLLOWS \nREVEREND ELIJAH GIPSON-DAVIS\nThe Rev. Elijah Gipson-Davis\, a native of Riverdale\, Georgia\, was ordained into the Gospel ministry at the New Macedonia Baptist Church. An anointed preacher\, talented scholar\, and skilled administrator\, he currently serves as the Minister of Administration and Assistant to the Pastor at the Myrtle Baptist Church of West Newton\, Massachusetts. Rev. Elijah shares academic interests in religion\, specifically African American and North American religious history\, gender and sexuality\, congregational studies\, Christian education\, and liturgics. \nRABBI TIFERET BERENBAUM\nRabbi Tiferet Berenbaum received Rabbinic Ordination and a Master’s in Jewish Education from Hebrew College in 2013\, after spending a year in Israel as part of her studies. Rav Tiferet served congregations in Milwaukee\, WI and Mt. Holly\, New Jersey\, then returned home to Boston and TBZ in 2019. DESCRIPTION:FUUSN’s Social Justice Speakers Task Force is holding a discussion with Christine Nguyen\, Jefferson Hussey\, and Renee Hamilton\, volunteer organizers with Eastern Service Workers Association (ESWA). ESWA is an all-volunteer association of low-paid service workers and allies uniting to end poverty conditions in our communities by addressing their root causes. For 49 years in the Boston area\, it has refused government funding or money with strings attached\, relying instead on grassroots support from members and community volunteers. The speakers will talk about ESWA’s Winter Survival Campaign and how members help one another meet urgent needs such as food\, clothing\, and other basic necessities so they can participate in organizing for long-term solutions. You will hear how local small businesses\, students\, professionals\, congregations and other concerned residents support this work. A complementary light lunch will be served. The Social Justice Speakers Task Force is part of FUUSN’s Social Justice Council\, which coordinates our congregation’s efforts to put faith into action through social justice work in our communities and beyond. The film emerges from a harrowing incident in 2017 when Jones was followed by a racist vigilante along back roads in rural Canada. Over time\, that encounter cast a long shadow over his life\, prompting a deep\, introspective journey to understand not just what happened\, but how it shaped him. \nRather than a conventional documentary\, Night Fight weaves together Jones’s personal reflections\, self-portrait video fragments\, and interviews with academics\, artists\, and writers about racial violence\, memory\, and psychological impact. The narrative oscillates between the literal journey back to the site of the incident and an emotional\, internal journey toward meaning and healing. \nDescribed as a candid\, nuanced\, and deeply personal film\, Night Fight confronts systemic and interpersonal racial violence and discrimination. It engages with the challenge of sharing an internal reality that is both singular and emblematic of broader collective experiences. \nJoin us for a post-film discussion with the filmmaker Khary Jones. \nKhary Saeed Jones is an award-winning filmmaker\, editor\, and Professor of the Practice in Drama\, Film\, and Performance Studies at Tufts University\, where he teaches screen storytelling and mentors students in both documentary and scripted projects. Newton native Constantine Finehouse is a virtuoso pianist who has performed extensively in the U.S. and abroad\, including Salzburg\, Trieste\, London\, Ghent\, Moscow\, St. Petersburg and Odessa\, and recorded several highly acclaimed violin-piano and cello-piano albums with Daniel Kurganov\, Sebastian Baverstam\, and others. Boston area cellist Tyler Michael James has been praised as a passionate musician with a “soulful\, lyrical tone” and a “phenomenal color palette”\, who has performed with A Far Cry\, Castle of Our Skins\, Rockport Music\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, 92nd Street Y\, and Cape Cod’s Red Door Chamber Music\, among others. The film blends Southern Gothic\, blues music\, historical memory\, and supernatural horror\, creating a richly layered narrative about community\, survival\, and cultural expression. \nPOST SCREENING PANEL DISCUSSION\nOur panel will explore the film’s fusion of music\, history\, and horror\, considering how SINNERS engages with African-American cultural traditions\, the symbolic role of blues music in confronting evil\, and the artistic choices that make the film a singular cinematic experience. \nJAKE BLOUNT\, A.M.\nMusician\, Scholar\, and Music Consultant on SINNERS;\nSpecialist in Traditional African-American Music and Afrofuturism\nJake Blount is an award-winning musician and scholar whose work bridges performance\, research\, and advocacy. He specializes in African-American traditional music and Afrofuturist approaches\, and his recordings have appeared on best-of lists from NPR\, The New Yorker\, and Rolling Stone.
