SUMMARY:Behind the Screen: All God's Children
DESCRIPTION:In an unprecedented attempt to heal centuries of racism and antisemitism\, and combat the rising racial and ethnic tension in their Brooklyn communities\, the largest reform synagogue and the oldest black Baptist Church attempt to unite their congregations and bring about peace\, by becoming family. Shot over five years by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Ondi Timoner\, ALL GOD’S CHILDREN follows her sister\, activist Rabbi Rachel Timoner\, and her Congregation Beth Elohim’s partnership with Reverend Dr. Robert Waterman of Antioch Baptist Church as their faith is put to the test\, and both congregations struggle not to let their differences drive them apart. Though it’s a fraught partnership\, they refuse to walk away\, no matter how hard it gets\, and ultimately emerge with an inspiring model for how other communities might build bridges across religious\, economic and class divides to foster enduring\, powerful partnerships. \nPANEL DISCUSSION FOLLOWS \nREVEREND ELIJAH GIPSON-DAVIS\nThe Rev. Elijah Gipson-Davis\, a native of Riverdale\, Georgia\, was ordained into the Gospel ministry at the New Macedonia Baptist Church. An anointed preacher\, talented scholar\, and skilled administrator\, he currently serves as the Minister of Administration and Assistant to the Pastor at the Myrtle Baptist Church of West Newton\, Massachusetts. Rev. Elijah shares academic interests in religion\, specifically African American and North American religious history\, gender and sexuality\, congregational studies\, Christian education\, and liturgics. \nRABBI TIFERET BERENBAUM\nRabbi Tiferet Berenbaum received Rabbinic Ordination and a Master’s in Jewish Education from Hebrew College in 2013\, after spending a year in Israel as part of her studies. Rav Tiferet served congregations in Milwaukee\, WI and Mt. Holly\, New Jersey\, then returned home to Boston and TBZ in 2019. Always desiring to continue to learn\, she is currently pursuing a doctorate in Educational Leadership at Lesley University in Cambridge\, MA. \nMODERATED BY: JAYMIE SAKS\nJaymie is the Director of Development at 2LifeCommunities and served for more than a decade as executive director of Boston Jewish Film (BJF) and was chief operating officer of the Jewish Women’s Archive.

SUMMARY:Social Justice Speaker Lunch
DESCRIPTION:FUUSN’s Social Justice Speakers Task Force is holding a discussion with Christine Nguyen\, Jefferson Hussey\, and Renee Hamilton\, volunteer organizers with Eastern Service Workers Association (ESWA). ESWA is an all-volunteer association of low-paid service workers and allies uniting to end poverty conditions in our communities by addressing their root causes. For 49 years in the Boston area\, it has refused government funding or money with strings attached\, relying instead on grassroots support from members and community volunteers. The speakers will talk about ESWA’s Winter Survival Campaign and how members help one another meet urgent needs such as food\, clothing\, and other basic necessities so they can participate in organizing for long-term solutions. You will hear how local small businesses\, students\, professionals\, congregations and other concerned residents support this work. A complementary light lunch will be served. The Social Justice Speakers Task Force is part of FUUSN’s Social Justice Council\, which coordinates our congregation’s efforts to put faith into action through social justice work in our communities and beyond. For more information about FUUSN’s Social Justice Council and to R.S.V.P. to this event\, use this link. First Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton (FUUSN) is a congregation with liberal and progressive theology. Founded in 1848\, for 177 years\, its mission is to connect deeply in community\, grow in spirit\, and build a just world.

SUMMARY:Night Fight
DESCRIPTION:Night Fight is a hybrid documentary\, nonfiction framed with creative\, cinematic storytelling directed and edited by Khary Saeed Jones. The film emerges from a harrowing incident in 2017 when Jones was followed by a racist vigilante along back roads in rural Canada. Over time\, that encounter cast a long shadow over his life\, prompting a deep\, introspective journey to understand not just what happened\, but how it shaped him. \nRather than a conventional documentary\, Night Fight weaves together Jones’s personal reflections\, self-portrait video fragments\, and interviews with academics\, artists\, and writers about racial violence\, memory\, and psychological impact. The narrative oscillates between the literal journey back to the site of the incident and an emotional\, internal journey toward meaning and healing. \nDescribed as a candid\, nuanced\, and deeply personal film\, Night Fight confronts systemic and interpersonal racial violence and discrimination. It engages with the challenge of sharing an internal reality that is both singular and emblematic of broader collective experiences. \nJoin us for a post-film discussion with the filmmaker Khary Jones. \nKhary Saeed Jones is an award-winning filmmaker\, editor\, and Professor of the Practice in Drama\, Film\, and Performance Studies at Tufts University\, where he teaches screen storytelling and mentors students in both documentary and scripted projects. Jones holds an MFA in Film Directing and an MA in English from Columbia University\, as well as a BA in English from Morehouse College.\nHis work as a writer-director explores the tensions between fiction\, memory\, and lived experience\, and has screened at major festivals and cultural venues including Sundance\, SXSW\, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York\, Full Frame Documentary Film Festival\, and ICA Boston.

SUMMARY:Efficient Water Heating for Newton Homes
DESCRIPTION:Newton homeowners and residents are invited to a free virtual educational webinar\, Efficient Water Heating for Newton Homes\, on Thursday\, February 19 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM via Zoom. The event will explore efficient\, low-carbon water heating solutions and offer guidance for anyone considering a water heater upgrade or replacement.\nWater heating represents one of the largest energy uses in a typical home\, and choosing the right system can lead to significant energy bill savings and reduced carbon emissions. The webinar is designed to provide practical\, non-technical information to help residents make informed decisions about their hot water systems.\nThe program will cover a range of options\, including heat pump water heaters\, which use electricity more efficiently and can lower energy use and emissions; solar-assisted and hybrid systems that combine renewable energy with modern heat pump technology; and tankless (on-demand) water heaters\, with guidance on when they may be a good fit for a home. The session will also include a real-world case study illustrating how a homeowner evaluated options and made a decision.\nThe session will focus on how these systems perform in everyday life — including space and installation considerations\, efficiency\, and long-term value — with time allotted for attendee questions.\nThe webinar is co-hosted by Green Newton and the City of Newton Climate & Sustainability Team\, with local expert participation from Reservoir Home\, New England Solar Hot Water\, and Boston Tank Swap.\nEvent Details:\nEfficient Water Heating for Newton Homes — Free Webinar\nThursday\, February 19\, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM\nFree virtual event; registration required to receive the Zoom link. \nFor more information and to register\, visit greennewton.org/event/efficient-water-heating-webinar/

SUMMARY:Mary Pickford's Sparrows: Live Music Accompaniment
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Mary Pickford’s\, SPARROWS (1926) with live musical accompaniment. \nABOUT THE FILM:\nMolly\, the eldest child at a baby farm hidden deep in a swamp\, must rescue the others when their cruel master decides that one of them will be disposed of. \nLIVE MUSIC\nBRUCE VOGT\nBruce Vogt is a Canadian pianist who has devoted a distinguished career to performing and teaching. He has toured cities and towns of all sizes throughout North America\, Europe\, and Asia as a soloist and chamber musician. He has mentored generations of young artists in his role as professor of piano at the University of Victoria\, and has lectured widely\, leading master classes\, workshops\, and adjudicating for festivals. \nBruce has sustained an interest in exploring the many conversations to be found between music and film\, literature and painting. This has evolved into an unusual side hustle: improvising accompaniments for the great films of the silent era. He has developed a robust career in this multimedia sphere bringing sound to many masterpieces — by Chaplin\, Keaton\, Lloyd\, Griffith\, Sjöström\, Von Sternberg and many others. In movie theaters across Europe\, Asia\, and North America\, he has provided for audiences a greater intimacy with these films\, transforming the silence of the medium into another sphere.

SUMMARY:Behind the Screen: Sinners
DESCRIPTION:SINNERS is a genre-defying period horror drama written and directed by Ryan Coogler\, set in 1932 Mississippi during the Jim Crow era. The story follows twin brothers Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore\, portrayed by Michael B. Jordan in dual roles\, who return to their hometown to open a juke joint for the local Black community\, only to find that an ancient\, supernatural evil threatens their celebration and their lives. The film blends Southern Gothic\, blues music\, historical memory\, and supernatural horror\, creating a richly layered narrative about community\, survival\, and cultural expression. \nPOST SCREENING PANEL DISCUSSION\nOur panel will explore the film’s fusion of music\, history\, and horror\, considering how SINNERS engages with African-American cultural traditions\, the symbolic role of blues music in confronting evil\, and the artistic choices that make the film a singular cinematic experience. \nJAKE BLOUNT\, A.M.\nMusician\, Scholar\, and Music Consultant on SINNERS;\nSpecialist in Traditional African-American Music and Afrofuturism\nJake Blount is an award-winning musician and scholar whose work bridges performance\, research\, and advocacy. He specializes in African-American traditional music and Afrofuturist approaches\, and his recordings have appeared on best-of lists from NPR\, The New Yorker\, and Rolling Stone. SUMMARY:An Evening with John Sayles
DESCRIPTION:West Newton Cinema Reads & Newtonville Books present: \nThe iconic filmmaker John Sayles reading from and discussing his new novel\, The Crucible\, along with his classic film\, City of Hope\, with Here & Now’s Robin Young. \nJoin director John Sayles as he reads from his new novel\, The Crucible\, following a screening of his riveting film\, City of Hope (1991). \nIn The Crucible\, Henry Ford—the Elon Musk of his day—aims to rule both an automotive empire and the rambunctious city of Detroit. In an epic tale ranging from the Prohibition Era to the Second World War\, featuring violent labor disputes\, misbegotten jungle expeditions\, a tragic race riot\, and the gestapo tactics of Ford’s private army\, Sayles does what he’s become famous for: shows us\, through multiple perspectives\, the country in which we live. \nIn City of Hope\, an old apartment complex stands in the way of a major commercial development. Its owner\, Joe\, feels pressure to torch it\, and Joe’s estranged son\, Nick\, soon becomes a pawn in the game. Following the arrest of two teenagers\, idealistic city councilman Wynn finds himself torn between what he thinks is right\, and what his Black constituents want. \nSayles and Young will walk us through this incredible cast of characters and the themes that make both The Crucible and City of Hope so crucial to understanding our current moment. Their talk will follow with a signing in the lobby\, with books for sale courtesy of Newtonville Books. \nJohn Sayles is an independent filmmaker\, screenwriter\, actor\, and novelist. He has twice been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay\, and once for the National Book Award. He has written eight novels\, including\, most recently\, Jamie MacGillivray and To Save the Man. \nRobin Young is a host of Here and Now\, the nationally syndicated radio program produced by WBUR. A Peabody Award-winning documentary filmmaker\, Robin has been a correspondent for ABC\, CBS\, NBC\, and the Discovery Channel. She is a former guest host of The Today Show and one of the first hosts on Boston’s ground-breaking television show\, Evening Magazine.

SUMMARY:Indie Lens Pop-Up: "The Librarians" Film Screening & Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join the Newton Free Library and GBH for an Indie Lens Pop-Up! This event will feature a screening of the Independent Lens documentary The Librarians\, in which librarians across the U.S. examine how book review policies are shaping their communities. \nFollowing the screening will be a panel discussion and Q&A with Malinda Lo\, bestselling author and member of Mass Freedom to Read\, and Andrea Fiorillo\, Co-Chair of the Massachusetts Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom/Social Responsibilities Committee. The panel will focus on the state of intellectual freedom and book bans and challenges here in Massachusetts. \nAbout the Film: \nThe Librarians \nBy Kim A. Snyder (director/producer)\, Janique L. Robillard (producer)\, Maria Cuomo Cole (producer)\, and Jana Edelbaum (producer) \nWhen Texas lawmakers seek to review a list of books\, librarians find themselves on the frontlines of a national battle. Across the U.S.\, librarians face the impact of uniting against library collection standards that include restrictions on race-related and LGBTQIA+ content. Drawing on historical context\, The Librarians explores the broader implications for education and public life. \nAbout the Panelists: \nMalinda Lo is the New York Times-bestselling author of seven novels\, including the National Book Award-winning Last Night at the Telegraph Club\, which was the fourth most banned book in schools during the 2024-25 school year\, according to PEN America. She received the Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Bravery in Literature in 2025\, and is an active member of the Mass Freedom To Read coalition. \nAndrea Fiorillo\, MLIS\, is Co-Chair of the Massachusetts Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom/Social Responsibilities Committee and the Manager of Cambridge Public Library’s O’Neill Branch. \nAbout Indie Lens Pop-Up: \nFor more than 20 years\, the award-winning Indie Lens Pop-Up program has partnered with local organizations across the country to bring people together for film screenings and community-driven conversations. Inspired by the documentaries featured on PBS’s Independent Lens\, Indie Lens Pop-Up is a space for sharing ideas and making connections that shape our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Since its inception in 2005\, nearly half a million participants have come together at Indie Lens Pop-Up events to discuss issues that impact local communities. Learn more at pbs.org/indielenspopup. \nThe film runs approximately 90 minutes\, followed by a 30-minute panel.

SUMMARY:Holocaust Remembrance Day. Exhibition and Film Screening.
DESCRIPTION:Screening of the documentary film The Lost Brothers\, Israel.\nAn exhibition of graphic art\, photographs\, and wood inlay work.\nArtworks by Alexander Gassel\, Andrey Gagarin\, and Mikhail Faktorovich. \nArt About the Holocaust \nAlexander Gassel is a Russian-American artist and designer. Blending the avant-garde with traditional Russian iconography and combining ancient symbols with contemporary subjects\, Gassel creates surrealist works that reflect his cultural heritage alongside his experience of life in America. \nAlexander Gassel uses ancient techniques employed in the creation of icon paintings. He paints with egg yolk tempera\, making his own color pigments by grinding natural stones and minerals\, such as malachite\, cinnabar\, or lapis into powder\, which he then mixes with egg yolk. The artist often applies gold or silver leaf on the paintings. Blending the avant-garde with traditional Russian iconography\, combining ancient symbols with contemporary subjects\, Gassel creates surrealist works that reflect his cultural heritage alongside his experience of life in America. \nLearn more about Alexander Gassel and his works at https://alexandergassel.com \nAndrey Gagarin \nI am a 74-year-old psychiatrist with no formal photographic education\, but I have been making photographs since the age of twelve. My work arises from observation rather than instruction — from standing still\, listening\, and looking carefully at the world in front of me. \nThe image of Birkenau was taken six years ago using infrared optics. I chose infrared not for effect\, but because it reveals what ordinary sight cannot: the quiet trace of time\, the way memory lingers in light long after people have disappeared. For me\, this photograph is not a document of a place\, but an encounter with history — a way of seeing underlying presence and absence at the same moment. \nPhotography\, like psychiatry\, is an act of attention. It asks you to stay\, to witness\, and to hold what is often difficult to hold. This is what I try to do with my images. \nMichael Farro (Mikhail Faktorovich) — Marquetry \nhttps://michaelfarro.art \nMichael Farro was born in Bobruisk\, Belarus.
