DESCRIPTION:Want to try an instrument that is fun and relatively easy to play? Learn the fundamentals of ukulele playing with Julie Stepanek Murray! This three part series will cover the basics (tuning\, fretting\, strumming\, and reading chord diagrams) as well as providing the opportunity to ask questions and to play fun and easy songs. No experience necessary. This series is geared towards adults. \nWe recommend attending all three sessions of this workshop since each workshop will build on the previous one. But if you already know a few basics or feel confident that you can catch up\, you’re welcome to join the later sessions. \nYou can either bring a ukulele to the workshop or register to use one of Julie’s. If you have your own ukulele (or borrow one of the Library’s)\, no need to register in advance – just show up! \nIf you want to use one of Julie’s ukuleles\, please register on the Library’s website. When you sign up\, you are registering for all three sessions. SUMMARY:Newton History Series: The Origins and Transformations of Chinese Communities in Boston
DESCRIPTION:When did Chinese migration to Boston begin? How did Boston’s Chinatown take shape\, and what is its current status? This talk traces the origins of the Chinese presence in the region and examines their experiences from the early years of the United States\, through the Chinese Exclusion Era (1882–1943)\, to the recent decades that have witnessed the community’s significant growth across Greater Boston\, as well as the many challenges it continues to face. \nAbout the speaker: Lisong Liu is professor of history at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. His teaching and research interests focus on Chinese migration\, Asian American history\, U.S.-China relations\, and world history. His monograph on Chinese student and professional migration was published in 2015 as part of Routledge’s “Chinese Worlds” series. His current book project is about the history of Chinese immigrants in Boston. He is an associate in research at the Harvard Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and also a member of the International Advisory Committee at the Chinese Heritage Center at Nanyang Technological University\, Singapore. \nThis program is part of the Newton History Series\, co-sponsored by Historic Newton and the Newton Free Library. \nRegistration is encouraged\, and you’ll get a reminder if you sign up. Beginning with the deceptively simple question – “What does a ‘united Ireland’ actually mean?” – they examine the political\, economic\, and cultural implications of constitutional change. DESCRIPTION:NewTV’s Annual Membership Meeting will be held as a hybrid style meeting on Wednesday\, March 18 at 6:00pm. Members can choose to attend in person at the NewTV studio or via Zoom. Doors will open for our in-person attendees at 5:30PM; light refreshments\, networking\, and tours will be available immediately following the meeting. The meeting will include the approval of 2025 Annual Meeting Minutes\, departmental and financial reports\, and the election of two (2) candidate to the NewTV Board of Directors. \nMembers must be in good standing as of Wednesday\, February 25 at 6:00PM\, in order to be eligible to vote in the election. Due to the hybrid format of this meeting\, voting will be completed both with paper ballots for those attending in person\, as well as with an online form for those attending via Zoom. The online voting form will also be available to those unable to attend the meeting but who still wish to vote. Online voting will be available from Wednesday\, March 11 at 10:00AM through Tuesday\, March 17 at 6:00PM. Paper ballots will be distributed to in-person attendees upon their arrival. DESCRIPTION:Marking the official opening of its new location in Newton\, Wonder will host a grand opening celebration featuring giveaways and surprises from local partners\, along with free samples of popular chef-inspired menu items. \nThe first 100 guests will receive special swag bags\, including a tote bag featuring custom artwork by Julia Emiliani\, as well as a Wonder branded hat and a limited edition Julia Emiliani sticker sheet. The event will also feature freshly filled\, complimentary Wonder-green cannoli from Mike’s Pastry with download and sign up on the Wonder app. To give back\, $1 from every order placed during opening week (March 16-22) will be donated to The Greater Boston Food Bank. DESCRIPTION:This is a story about a girl named Ursula. \nUrsula’s father wanted her to get married\, but Ursula had already devoted herself her true love; and\, this being the fourth century\, her true love was the Christian church. Instead of marrying\, she led a movement of thousands of young women to embrace their independence and choose to serve God instead of serving a husband. \nHildegard von Bingen – the “patron saint” of Cappella – wrote an abundance of vivid music and poetry about Saint Ursula. These chants celebrate womanhood and independence: women do not need anyone to “complete” them\, and they are “complete-in-themselves”. \nIn this program\, we present Hildegard’s music for Saint Ursula interspersed with micro-commissions from five emerging composers from the Boston area. These commissions will comment on and take their inspiration from the Hildegard chants. \nFeaturing music by: Hildegard von Bingen and up-and-coming local composers: Chloe DeSteno\, Natti Robinson\, Katie Semro\, Stella Gitelman Willoughby\, and Alex Van Sant.

A leading expert on Price’s music\, Dr. Walwyn recorded the world premiere of Price’s Concerto in One Movement with the New Black Music Repertory Ensemble at the Center for Black Music Research in 2011. Her April 9\, 2022 release of Price’s complete solo piano works garnered two five-star reviews from Fanfare\, with critics praising her as “perfectly attuned” to the composer’s voice and describing the recording as “a marvelous release.” Dr. Walwyn serves as a Mellon Faculty Fellow and Professor of Music at Berklee College of Music. DESCRIPTION:Want to try an instrument that is fun and relatively easy to play? Learn the fundamentals of ukulele playing with Julie Stepanek Murray! This three part series will cover the basics (tuning\, fretting\, strumming\, and reading chord diagrams) as well as providing the opportunity to ask questions and to play fun and easy songs. No experience necessary. This series is geared towards adults. \nWe recommend attending all three sessions of this workshop since each workshop will build on the previous one. But if you already know a few basics or feel confident that you can catch up\, you’re welcome to join the later sessions. \nYou can either bring a ukulele to the workshop or register to use one of Julie’s. If you have your own ukulele (or borrow one of the Library’s)\, no need to register in advance – just show up! \nIf you want to use one of Julie’s ukuleles\, please register on the Library’s website.
