SUMMARY:A Midsummer Night's Dream
DESCRIPTION:A New Musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Updated to a place not unlike the great state of Florida\, where the country club abuts the everglades and everything is humid and everyone is every-so-slightly… strange\, this musical Midsummer takes place on the eve of billionaire film producer Demetrius and District Attorney Hermia’s wedding of the century. The comedy\, enchantment\, and twisted emotional journeys of the Bard’s source material mixes with contemporary nonsense\, and a whole lot of horns! All are welcomed in\, including the audience\, as words\, dance and music fuse\, and we find out just what twisted kind of Fools These Mortals Be. \nBy Daniel Lazour\, Patrick Lazour and Mark Sonnenblick (KPOP Demon Hunters) \nBased on the play by William Shakespeare \nDirected by Patrick Lazour (2026-2027 Monan Professor of Theatre Arts) \nMusic Directed by David McGrory

SUMMARY:Community Open Sing of Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus
DESCRIPTION:Choral singers of all levels: Join members of Zamir Chorale of Boston in an Open Sing of Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus! Listeners welcome! \nWe invite choral singers of all levels to join members of the Zamir Chorale of Boston\, under the direction of Prof. Joshua Jacobson\, to sing some of the favorite choruses from George Frideric Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus. Bring your own score or use one of ours. Listeners are welcome\, as well. \nAdmission is free but we do encourage a donation of $10. Pre-registration is strongly suggested so that we have enough seats. \nGeorge Frideric Handel (1685-1759) is best known to the general public today as the composer of Messiah\, one of the greatest and most popular oratorios of all time. Five years after Messiah\, in the summer of 1746\, Handel began to compose a more dramatic oratorio\, based on the victories of the Maccabees\, Judas Maccabaeus. \nMade possible in part by a grant from Spark Newton.

SUMMARY:Musical Matinee: Kiss Me Kate
DESCRIPTION:Two formerly married actors (Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel) are forced back into contact with each other when they’re cast in a production of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Will their history completely derail the show\, or will they find a way to put their differences aside until\, at least\, opening night? Or could they even start to like each other again? A bright technicolor confection\, Kiss Me Kate brings The Taming of the Shrew into the age of the MGM musical\, complete with music by the one and only Cole Porter. This film brings laughs a-plenty\, with gorgeous sets and costumes—and keep your eyes peeled for a young Bob Fosse in one of his first screen roles!

SUMMARY:Behind the Screen: Once Upon A Time In Harlem
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE FILM\nONCE UPON A TIME IN HARLEM captures an extraordinary evening in 1972\, when pioneering documentarian William Greaves gathered surviving luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance at Duke Ellington’s Harlem townhouse. Over four hours\, artists\, writers\, and intellectuals\, many of whom had not seen one another in fifty years\, reminisced\, argued\, laughed\, and debated their place in a rapidly changing cultural landscape. Greaves considered it the most important event he ever filmed. Decades later\, his son David Greaves\, one of the original camera operators\, restored the 16mm footage and completed the film\, creating both a vivid time capsule and a searching inquiry into one of the most creative periods in American history. \nPANEL DISCUSSION FOLLOWS\nOur panelists will discuss the Harlem Renaissance and its legacy\, the remarkable figures gathered in Greaves’s footage\, and the story of how this film was made and\, fifty years later\, finally completed. \nKENDRA FIELD\nAssociate Professor of History and Director of the Center for Public History\, Tufts University\nKendra Field is Associate Professor of History and Director of the Center for Public History at Tufts University.
