This three part series will cover the basics (tuning\, fretting\, strumming\, and reading chord diagrams) as well as providing the opportunity to ask questions and to play fun and easy songs. No experience necessary. This series is geared towards adults. \nWe recommend attending all three sessions of this workshop since each workshop will build on the previous one. But if you already know a few basics or feel confident that you can catch up\, you’re welcome to join the later sessions. \nYou can either bring a ukulele to the workshop or register to use one of Julie’s. If you have your own ukulele (or borrow one of the Library’s)\, no need to register in advance – just show up! \nIf you want to use one of Julie’s ukuleles\, please register on the Library’s website. Despite this long history of agricultural use\, the farm’s soil is a thriving biome with high levels of organic matter. What techniques does NCF use to ensure these goals? How do these relate to contemporary notions such as regenerative agriculture? DESCRIPTION:Newton Baroque presents music of the Stuttgart Court.\nGiuseppe Antonio Brescianello (ca. 1690 to 1758) grew up in Bologna and spent much of his career at the courts of Munich and Stuttgart. His Concerti a tre are richly imaginative trio sonatas that combine the intimacy of chamber music with the brilliance of concerto-style violin writing. Each work functions like a concerto for two violins\, unfolding without the support of a full orchestra. \nLike many Italian musicians who were recruited to German courts in the eighteenth century\, Brescianello is not widely known today. In his own time\, however\, he was highly respected\, particularly for his violin concertos. These works offer a vivid glimpse into the cosmopolitan musical life of the German courts and showcase a distinctive voice at the crossroads of Italian virtuosity and German refinement. \nMore information available at https://www.newtonbaroque.org/

DESCRIPTION:If the realist theories of international relations were correct\, there would have been little or no sustained U.S. governmental involvement in the Irish peace process in the 1990s and beyond. Yet history tells a different story. What explains the enduring role of Irish America in shaping U.S. policy toward Irish nationalism\, particularly in relation to Northern Ireland? How has that influence evolved over time\, and what does the future hold? Is the familiar narrative of a “vanishing” Irish and Irish-American presence in U.S. politics truly plausible? \nIreland’s relationship with the United States has long rested on ancestral ties\, shared democratic values\, and the influence of a powerful diaspora. Economic connections between the two counties are substantial\, and U.S. political and economic support has been critical in securing and sustaining peace in Northern Ireland. \nIn this Irish Institute lecture\, Brendan O’Leary\, Lauder Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania\, examines the political relationships linking Ireland\, Irish America\, and the United States\, with particular attention to the Northern Ireland peace process and the sources of sustained American engagement. SUMMARY:Newton History Series: The Troubled History of Race and Public Education in Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:Many of us learn about school desegregation in the context of the mid-twentieth-century South: Brown v. Board of Education\, Ruby Bridges\, and the Little Rock Nine. Yet a century before that\, young Black women in Massachusetts led the fight for equal school rights—the right of all to a quality education on an equal basis. This lecture examines the lives of young Black women whose activism reshaped public education in the Bay State. Exploring this history is vital\, not only to spotlight the long struggle for Black educational justice\, but also to remind us of our collective obligation to democratize public schools today. \nAbout the speaker: Kabria Baumgartner is an award-winning historian who has worked with numerous historical organizations. In 2021\, she co-founded the award-winning Newburyport Black History Initiative (NBHI)\, an organization that highlights and incorporates Black history into the public landscape in downtown Newburyport. In 2019\, she published her first academic book\, In Pursuit of Knowledge: Black Women and Educational Activism in Antebellum America\, which tells the story of young Black women who fought to democratize public education in the nineteenth-century North. She is Dean’s Associate Professor of History and Africana Studies at Northeastern University. \nThis program is part of the Newton History Series\, co-sponsored by Historic Newton and the Newton Free Library. \nRegistration is encouraged\, and you’ll get a reminder if you sign up. Shot over five years by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Ondi Timoner\, ALL GOD’S CHILDREN follows her sister\, activist Rabbi Rachel Timoner\, and her Congregation Beth Elohim’s partnership with Reverend Dr. Robert Waterman of Antioch Baptist Church as their faith is put to the test\, and both congregations struggle not to let their differences drive them apart. Elijah Gipson-Davis\, a native of Riverdale\, Georgia\, was ordained into the Gospel ministry at the New Macedonia Baptist Church.
