DESCRIPTION:Want to try an instrument that is fun and relatively easy to play? Learn the fundamentals of ukulele playing with Julie Stepanek Murray! This three part series will cover the basics (tuning\, fretting\, strumming\, and reading chord diagrams) as well as providing the opportunity to ask questions and to play fun and easy songs. No experience necessary. This series is geared towards adults. \nWe recommend attending all three sessions of this workshop since each workshop will build on the previous one. But if you already know a few basics or feel confident that you can catch up\, you’re welcome to join the later sessions. \nYou can either bring a ukulele to the workshop or register to use one of Julie’s. If you have your own ukulele (or borrow one of the Library’s)\, no need to register in advance – just show up! \nIf you want to use one of Julie’s ukuleles\, please register on the Library’s website. When you sign up\, you are registering for all three sessions. DESCRIPTION:Thursday afternoon\, May 21\, Newton South High School will once again host the Garden City Cup\, an annual exhibition match involving all the tennis teams at Newton North and Newton South. (Rain date: May 22)\n2024 marks the 24nd anniversary of the first Garden City Cup. The Cup is a collaborative effort involving the high schools’ athletic departments\, Newton’s Department of Parks and Recreation\, and the Friends of Newton Tennis.\nThe event honors the memory of Linda Zuker\, Newton South’s former assistant tennis coach\, who succumbed in 2000 to a rare disease. The Linda F. Zuker Memorial Youth Foundation supports youth athletics in the region and helps fund Tenacity\, an organization that promotes tennis in the inner city.\nThe format this year will be mixed doubles matches on both the junior varsity and varsity level. The program starts at 4 PM. Around 4:30 PM we will hold a brief ceremony commemorating the occasion and honoring the achievements of the high school teams. Mayor Marc Laredo will also address the crowd\, which includes players destined next week to play in the MIAA State Team Tournament. Afterwards\, the matches resume. About 80 players in total will compete in the Cup\, all in the spirit of good fun.\nThis tradition does more than bring the high schools together in a friendly competition. DESCRIPTION:Orchestra Without Borders\, under the baton of Conductor and Artistic Director Luca Antonucci\, will present \nVariaciones: Music from Argentina and Brazil\non Wednesday\, May 20\, 2026\, at 7:30 PM\nat the First Unitarian Universalist Society in Newton. \nThe concert will benefit Communities Without Borders (CWB)\, a\nNewtonbased 501(c)(3) that has supported education for orphaned and vulnerable children in Zambia since 1999. \nThe evening celebrates the traditional rhythms of\nArgentina and Brazil\, pairing music by Heitor VillaLobos\nand Alberto Williams with the electricity of Grooversity\nPercussion\, led by Berkleetrained\, Bahiaborn\npercussionist Marcus Santos. The program also explores\nthe legacy of Brazilian composer Chiquinha Gonzaga. \nWe also welcome soprano Hannah Shanefield as featured\nsoloist on VillaLobos’s Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5. Proceeds\ngo directly to support CWB’s work in Zambia. Founded in\n1999 by Dr. Richard Bail\, CWB has supported more than\n9\,000 Zambian learners through school fees\, uniforms\,\nbooks\, daily meals\, teacher training\, and health programs.
