SUMMARY:Blood and Honey: Modern Visions of Hildegard
DESCRIPTION:This is a story about a girl named Ursula. \nUrsula’s father wanted her to get married\, but Ursula had already devoted herself her true love; and\, this being the fourth century\, her true love was the Christian church. Instead of marrying\, she led a movement of thousands of young women to embrace their independence and choose to serve God instead of serving a husband. \nHildegard von Bingen – the “patron saint” of Cappella – wrote an abundance of vivid music and poetry about Saint Ursula. These chants celebrate womanhood and independence: women do not need anyone to “complete” them\, and they are “complete-in-themselves”. \nIn this program\, we present Hildegard’s music for Saint Ursula interspersed with micro-commissions from five emerging composers from the Boston area. These commissions will comment on and take their inspiration from the Hildegard chants. \nFeaturing music by: Hildegard von Bingen and up-and-coming local composers: Chloe DeSteno\, Natti Robinson\, Katie Semro\, Stella Gitelman Willoughby\, and Alex Van Sant.

SUMMARY:SHINE mural project
DESCRIPTION:SHINE Mural project for Newton middle and high school artists \nNewton Community Events & Programs (formerly Newton Cultural Development) is once again offering student artists a chance to “shine” through our SHINE mural project. The full details are on our website here\, and here are the important bullet points: \n– Artists paint a 6’x3′ plywood panel that is later placed at a highly visible outdoor location in Newton\n– They are professional public artists on this project\, earning a stipend of $200 (to include their purchase of paint supplies)\n– The murals must represent their interpretation of the theme: America at 250\n– The link to apply is here and the deadline to apply is this Friday\, February 27 (samples needed by the following Friday) \nThe students who have participated in this project the last three years have offered very different perspectives on our SHINE theme\, all of them well thought out and wonderfully executed. The students gain great experience planning and implementing a public art project and working on schedule.

SUMMARY:Holocaust Remembrance Day. Exhibition and Film Screening.
DESCRIPTION:Screening of the documentary film The Lost Brothers\, Israel.\nAn exhibition of graphic art\, photographs\, and wood inlay work.\nArtworks by Alexander Gassel\, Andrey Gagarin\, and Mikhail Faktorovich. \nArt About the Holocaust \nAlexander Gassel is a Russian-American artist and designer. Blending the avant-garde with traditional Russian iconography and combining ancient symbols with contemporary subjects\, Gassel creates surrealist works that reflect his cultural heritage alongside his experience of life in America. \nAlexander Gassel uses ancient techniques employed in the creation of icon paintings. He paints with egg yolk tempera\, making his own color pigments by grinding natural stones and minerals\, such as malachite\, cinnabar\, or lapis into powder\, which he then mixes with egg yolk. The artist often applies gold or silver leaf on the paintings. Blending the avant-garde with traditional Russian iconography\, combining ancient symbols with contemporary subjects\, Gassel creates surrealist works that reflect his cultural heritage alongside his experience of life in America. \nLearn more about Alexander Gassel and his works at https://alexandergassel.com \nAndrey Gagarin \nI am a 74-year-old psychiatrist with no formal photographic education\, but I have been making photographs since the age of twelve. My work arises from observation rather than instruction — from standing still\, listening\, and looking carefully at the world in front of me. \nThe image of Birkenau was taken six years ago using infrared optics. I chose infrared not for effect\, but because it reveals what ordinary sight cannot: the quiet trace of time\, the way memory lingers in light long after people have disappeared. For me\, this photograph is not a document of a place\, but an encounter with history — a way of seeing underlying presence and absence at the same moment. \nPhotography\, like psychiatry\, is an act of attention. It asks you to stay\, to witness\, and to hold what is often difficult to hold. This is what I try to do with my images. \nMichael Farro (Mikhail Faktorovich) — Marquetry \nhttps://michaelfarro.art \nMichael Farro was born in Bobruisk\, Belarus. He studied at MIIT in Moscow and earned a Ph.D. in Economics. Michael works as a computer programmer and has taught computer science at Boston University. In parallel with his technical career\, he pursues marquetry — creating narrative wood veneer panels that explore memory\, history\, and human experience. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife.

DESCRIPTION:Quilts tell stories\, and quilt history is full of myths and misinformation as well as heart-warming tales of service and tradition. Nearly every world culture that has cold weather uses quilted textiles – quilting is not just an American art. Pam Weeks weaves world history\, women’s history\, industrial history\, and just plain wonderful stories into her presentation. Participants are invited to bring one quilt for identification and/or story sharing. Prompted in part by the material culture at hand\, the presenter may speak about fashion fads\, the Colonial Revival\, quilt making for Civil War soldiers\, and anything else quilt-related she can squeeze in. \nAbout the presenter: Quilts have been the focus for more than half of Pam Weeks’ life. She started making quilts at the time of Bicentennial craft revival and by the mid-1980’s was designing her own work. In 1991 a class on reproducing antique quilts hooked Pam on quilt history. Her first book was published in 2011 on Civil War quilts made for soldiers; her second\, Deeds Not Words in 2019; and Portable Patchwork was published in 2020. Two more books are in the works. As the Binney Family Curator of the New England Quilt Museum Pam works with quilters\, collectors\, institutions\, and co-conspirators to plan exhibits and she continues research on the quilts in the museum’s collection.

SUMMARY:Silent Movie Monday presents 1916 fairy tale "Snow White" with live harp-viola score
DESCRIPTION:The historic West Newton Cinema will celebrate Silent Movie Monday with a special live score screening of the 1916 silent film Snow White on Monday\, September 29 at 7 pm. \nThe vintage film was heroically rescued and preserved for future generations just a few years ago\, and the parallels between the restored silent motion picture and the preservation of West Newton’s own beloved movie house are striking. \nLike all silent movies\, Snow White was made on flammable nitrate film stock\, and for many years\, it was rumored to have been destroyed in a vault fire. But a single theatrical print was discovered in the Netherlands in 1992\, and an amazing restoration was done by the George Eastman House film archive. \nThe whimsical silent fantasy returns to the big screen of a movie theater which was rescued itself just last summer. Through the mighty efforts of the West Newton Cinema Foundation and passionate support of local film lovers\, the 90-year-old venue has re-emerged as a vital cultural gathering place. The foundation now owns the building and is continuing its campaign to revitalize its Art Deco charm\, as well as provide a range of lively cinema storytelling for the public. \nCome experience the magic of movies with a silent fairy tale from the dawn of cinema accompanied by a live harp and viola score from Leslie McMichael\, harpist-composer\, and her sister Barbara McMichael\, viola. \nMcMichael enthuses\, “It’s thrilling to play live and pair the visuals of film with my music. With every performance\, we get to use our instruments to underscore the expressive acting so typical of the silent era – very fun!” \nFor advance tickets to the Snow White film screening with live harp and viola accompaniment\, visit https://www.westnewtoncinema.com/movie/snow-white-1916 General admission is $20 with discounts offered for students and teachers. West Newton Cinema is located at 1296 Washington Street\, West Newton\, MA.

SUMMARY:Silent Movie Monday - "Snow White" (1916) with live harp-viola score
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate National Silent Movie Day with a showing of the vintage silent film “Snow White” (1916) at the nonprofit West Newton Cinema on Monday\, September 29 at 7 pm. The event boasts a magical live score accompaniment by harpist-composer Leslie McMichael and violist Barbara McMichael. Although there have been many film versions of this fairy tale\, this silent movie was the first and the silent picture actually inspired a teen Walt Disney to make his own animated feature decades later. Snow White is played by Marguerite Clark in one of her few surviving film performances from the silent film era. The runtime of the vintage film with live harp and viola accompaniment is 62 minutes. https://www.westnewtoncinema.com/movie/snow-white-1916

In these remarkable stories from around the globe\, we invite you to immerse yourself in the narratives of individuals and groups confronting the unexpected twists and turns that life presents\, helping us gain a deeper understanding of resilience\, adaptation\, and the universal truths that bind us. \nThis year’s International Film Series has some impressive array of numbers\, underscoring its commitment to diversity and excellence: \nAn equal number of films are directed by women and men\, highlighting a commitment to gender parity in filmmaking.\nA record-breaking ten languages are represented in the series (in addition to English and French)\, including Arabic\, Croatian\, Italian\, Kabuverdianu\, Mongolian\, Persian\, Swedish\, Swiss-German\, Turkish\, and Urdu.\nThree films are their respective countries’ submissions for the Best International Feature Film Oscar\, demonstrating the caliber of the selection. \nOpening night on March 25\, at Apple Cinemas features the East Coast premiere of The Queen of My Dreams\, about a Pakistani Muslim woman and her Canadian-born daughter who come of age in two different eras\, sharing an obsession with the Bollywood fantasy film Aradhana. Director Fawzia Mirza will participate in a Q&A on Zoom following the screening; the screening will be preceded by a dinner reception featuring Indian and Canadian cuisine from 6:00-7:00 PM. \nThe other films include (only two films will be available online in addition to in-person: Traces and Bonjour Switzerland): \nApril 1 (Apple Cinemas): THE OLD OAK (UK\, New England premiere). Said to be director Ken Loach’s (The Angel’s Share) last film\, about a previously thriving mining town in Northern England and the owner of The Old Oak pub struggling to hold onto his establishment. When Syrian refugees are placed in empty houses\, the townspeople become divided on their presence. \nApril 8 (Apple Cinemas): TRACES (Croatia\, US premiere). Croatia’s submission for the Best International Feature Film Oscar. While grappling with loneliness\, loss and an uncertain future an anthropologist spends her time researches an ancient burial ritual in the mountains of Croatia in which exposed stones in a burial area would mark the length of a deceased person’s body\, and therefore leave a sign—a trace—of the life that had been lived. Speaker: Ellen Elias-Bursać\, a scholar known for her translations of fiction and nonfiction books by Bosnian\, Croatian\, and Serbian writers.. Available online: April 16-21 \nApril 15 (Embassy Theater): HESITATION WOUND (Turkey\, New England premiere). A criminal lawyer divides her time between the courthouse by day and her mother’s hospital bed at night. The plot turns on the moral choices she has to make that will affect the lives of her mother\, the judge\, and her murder suspect client. Speaker: Roberta Micaleff\, Professor of the Practice in Middle Eastern Literatures and Coordinator of the Turkish Language Program at Boston University.\nApril 29 (Embassy Theater): GREEN TIDE (France\, East Coast premiere). Following the deaths of several locals on the beaches in Brittany\, a freelance reporter comes to investigate the mystery surrounding algae that may be a cause of these tragic events. Complimentary Far Breton (a tart that originated in Brittany) served starting at 7 PM. \nMay 6 (West Newton Cinema): ÀMA GLORIA (France/Cape Verde\, East Coast premiere). Depicts the precious bond between a six-year-old French girl and her Cape Verdean nanny\, who spend one last summer together on the shores of the Cape Verdean islands. The film captures themes of family\, separation\, and the ties that bind from the point of view of its captivating young star. Speaker: Alirio Pereira\, a native of Cape Verde and Chief Program Officer of the Massachusetts Association of Portuguese Speakers. \nMay 13 (Majestic 7): CITY OF WIND (Mongolia\, New England premiere). Mongolia’s submission for the Best International Feature Film Oscar is a coming-of-age drama about a 17 year-old shaman who is juggling his spiritual responsibilities while attending high school in modern day Ulaanbaatar\, trying to reconcile his ties to the past with the practices of cold\, contemporary society. Speaker: Manduhai Buyandelger\, an anthropologist of religion\, gender\, and politics at MIT\, with regional expertise in Mongolia and shamans. \nMay 20 (West Newton Cinema): BONJOUR SWITZERLAND (Switzerland\, East Coast premiere). When a referendum in Switzerland leaves the country with French as the only national language\, it precipitates a crisis among the German and Italian speakers. Think Woody Allen’s Bananas crossed with The Russians Are Coming\, The Russians Are Coming! \nFunding is provided by a generous grant from the Mass Cultural Council.
