SUMMARY:A Conversation with Fintan O’Toole and Sam McBride
DESCRIPTION:On March 18\, 2026\, the Irish Institute of Boston College welcomes acclaimed journalists Fintan O’Toole and Sam McBride for a timely and thought-provoking discussion of their new book\, For and Against a United Ireland (Notre Dame Press\, 2026). \nIn this compelling exchange\, O’Toole and McBride each present arguments both for and against Irish unity. Beginning with the deceptively simple question – “What does a ‘united Ireland’ actually mean?” – they examine the political\, economic\, and cultural implications of constitutional change. From public services\, taxation\, and governance to identity and belonging\, they explore the issue with forensic precision and intellectual clarity. Would unity strengthen Northern Ireland or destabilize it? Would it improve life in the Republic? And could such a transformation occur peacefully? \nThe program will feature a moderated discussion followed by audience Q&A and a complimentary reception. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

SUMMARY:The US\, Irish America\, & the Irish Peace Process: Preliminary Reflections\, Observations & Recollections
DESCRIPTION:If the realist theories of international relations were correct\, there would have been little or no sustained U.S. governmental involvement in the Irish peace process in the 1990s and beyond. Yet history tells a different story. What explains the enduring role of Irish America in shaping U.S. policy toward Irish nationalism\, particularly in relation to Northern Ireland? How has that influence evolved over time\, and what does the future hold? Is the familiar narrative of a “vanishing” Irish and Irish-American presence in U.S. politics truly plausible? \nIreland’s relationship with the United States has long rested on ancestral ties\, shared democratic values\, and the influence of a powerful diaspora. Economic connections between the two counties are substantial\, and U.S. political and economic support has been critical in securing and sustaining peace in Northern Ireland. \nIn this Irish Institute lecture\, Brendan O’Leary\, Lauder Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania\, examines the political relationships linking Ireland\, Irish America\, and the United States\, with particular attention to the Northern Ireland peace process and the sources of sustained American engagement. All are welcome\, but registration is required.

SUMMARY:“The Old Oak”— Screening and Panel on Immigration in Boston and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:RENOWNED DIRECTOR’S FINAL FILM TACKLES ONE OF THE MOST FRAUGHT TOPICS OF TODAY \nJoe Kennedy III\, Marcela García\, Wilfix Cherazard\, and Ty Burr discuss Ken Loach’s “The Old Oak” and the immigrant crisis. \nThe movie screening will be September 12\, 6 p.m.\, at the West Newton Cinema. The event will be a joint fundraiser for English for New Bostonians and the West Newton Cinema Foundation. \nOne of the best films of 2023\, “The Old Oak” is a British drama about a poor mining town in the north of England\, the title pub at which the locals gather\, and the pub owner who befriends one of the town’s Syrian refugees and\, in being welcomed into her community\, is threatened with being ostracized from his own. It’s a humane masterpiece from writer-director Ken Loach\, who\, at 88\, has announced that after more than three dozen movies\, “The Old Oak” will be his last. \nThe film addresses one of the thorniest of modern issues\, the international refugee crisis and its effects on local communities\, and it does so in a way that is relevant both universally and to lived experiences in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. \nFollowing the screening on the 12th\, a distinguished panel will discuss the film and the issues faced by immigrants and local communities alike. Moderated by former Boston Globe film critic Ty Burr\, the panel will include former Congressman Joe Kennedy III\, Boston Globe reporter Marcela García\, and others! \nTickets can be purchased here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-old-oak-screening-and-panel-on-immigration-in-boston-and-beyond-tickets-998827027527?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Can new development help school budgets in cities like Newton?
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person or on Zoom. Following the contentious January 2024 teacher strike in Newton\, renewed attention has been paid to increasing the city budget without increasing tax rates. What role can local development\, including increasing the housing supply\, play in increasing the tax base and school funding? This talk with a Q&A will explore both the practical implications and research on the potential for new development\, particularly an expanded housing supply\, to bolster the tax base and\, consequently\, school funding. Presenters: Elise Rapoza\, author: “New Housing Production in Massachusetts: Fiscal Dynamics and Community Implications”. Luc Shuster\, Executive Director of Boston Indicators.

SUMMARY:BERDO Education Forum
DESCRIPTION:A coalition of Newton climate organizations (Green Newton\, 350Newton\, Mothers Out Front Newton\, and the FUUSN Climate Action Task Force) are sponsoring a public education forum on BERDO. We would appreciate it if you could attend\, and spread the word about the event to your networks. Contact me if you have questions. Light refreshments will be provided by Green Newton. \nIn Newton\, about 23% of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from about 293 large commercial buildings. In order to meet Newton’s Climate Plan goal of reducing GHG emissions to zero by 2050\, the emissions from these buildings must be addressed. A draft Building Emission Reduction and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO) will be presented to Newton’s Zoning and Planning Committee on Tuesday\, May 28th. The ordinance pertains to existing non-residential buildings that are larger than 20\,000 square feet in size\, including houses of worship. The ordinance sets a timeline for building owners to begin measuring the emissions from the buildings\, and for reducing emissions over time in a stepwise fashion. Come learn about this ordinance\, why it is important and what you can do to support it in the upcoming public hearing.

SUMMARY:Join us: Rally to Urge Statehouse Action on Climate Bills
DESCRIPTION:With only 60 days left in the Massachusetts statehouse session\, Newton will host one of seven rallies being held across the state on May 21st\, calling on legislators to do more for climate justice this legislative session. The rallies are organized by Mass Power Forward\, a coalition of over 200 Massachusetts organizations and leaders. \nFor one hour\, beginning at 5:30pm on the Newton Centre Green\, local activists will meet to sing\, chant\, and hear informed and inspiring speakers. The MPF coalition’s Rally message to the statehouse is this: act on critical climate bills now\, while there is time to craft good solutions\, not rushed compromises. \nFor three sessions in a row\, important bills have been left to the last minute\, making it nearly impossible for legislators and the public to engage in a meaningful democratic process. The corporations and utilities benefit from the last minute dash.
