SUMMARY:Uncommon Gems - 02 Nov 2025
DESCRIPTION:“Pro Arte welcomes conductor Sarah Ioannides\, Music Director of Symphony Tacoma and Director of Orchestral Activities at Boston University\, for a concert of rarely heard works. Bela Bartok originally composed his striking Romanian Folk Dances as a suite for piano\, later arranging it for chamber orchestra to great effect. As the first woman organist in Sweden\, the composer and conductor Elfrida Andree was a musical pioneer. Her carefree Intermezzo\, extracted from an earlier symphony\, is a breath of fresh air. Aaron Copland’s expressive Duo features Pro Arte’s principal flutist Ann Bobo. In Francis Poulenc’s colorful Sinfonietta\, the French composer’s signature wit and charm are on full musical display.”

Her songs feel at once fresh faced and firmly rooted\, driven by the whispery sensuality of her voice. She believes in the redemptive power of the shared secret; and is utterly unafraid to mine the darkest corners of her life for songs that turn fear into resilience and isolation into community.” The Boston Globe \n“This is a brilliant\, brilliant album. I have had this reaction once in the last 10 years and that was the first time I heard Patty Griffin.”\n– Rolling Stone music editor Dave Marsh \nwww.antjeduvekot.com

SUMMARY:Nuevas Raíces Concert with Guitarist Jhon Alvarado
DESCRIPTION:Nuevas Raíces honors Mexican culture through the exploration and sharing of classical music written for the guitar by contemporary Mexican composers. These are composers who have been influenced by the sounds and colors that define Mexico’s modern day vibrant culture. Guitarist Jhon Alvarado explores\, presents\, develops\, and expands upon the classical repertoire being written by today’s Mexican composers through the Nuevas Raíces concert program. \nJhon Alvarado\, guitar virtuoso\, re-energizes the classical guitar repertoire with captivating contemporary performances of world renowned 20th and 21st century composers. Jhon has premiered chamber works for renowned composer and Berklee College of Music faculty\, Beth Denisch. Jhon has performed on world stages including Jordan Hall\, David Friend Recital Hall\, the Frederick Loewe Memorial Hall\, and Boston GuitarFest. He received his MA in Classical Guitar Performance from the New England Conservatory in 2021 where he studied under Maestro Eliot Fisk and Dr. Jerome Mouffe. \nAs a music educator\, Jhon is inspired by his studies at the New England Conservatory and believes that “Music in education plays an essential role in the early stages of a child’s development by fostering a growth mindset that rewards and praises students based on effort put forth rather than test score or innate ‘talent.’” Jhon has been faculty at Boston University Tanglewood Institute and guest faculty at Northeastern University. Currently located in Boston\, MA\, Jhon sits on the board of directors for the Boston Classical Guitar Society and is the Guitar Department Coordinator at the Berklee College of Music.
