SUMMARY:Blood and Honey: Modern Visions of Hildegard
DESCRIPTION:This is a story about a girl named Ursula. \nUrsula’s father wanted her to get married\, but Ursula had already devoted herself her true love; and\, this being the fourth century\, her true love was the Christian church. Instead of marrying\, she led a movement of thousands of young women to embrace their independence and choose to serve God instead of serving a husband. \nHildegard von Bingen – the “patron saint” of Cappella – wrote an abundance of vivid music and poetry about Saint Ursula. These chants celebrate womanhood and independence: women do not need anyone to “complete” them\, and they are “complete-in-themselves”. \nIn this program\, we present Hildegard’s music for Saint Ursula interspersed with micro-commissions from five emerging composers from the Boston area. These commissions will comment on and take their inspiration from the Hildegard chants. \nFeaturing music by: Hildegard von Bingen and up-and-coming local composers: Chloe DeSteno\, Natti Robinson\, Katie Semro\, Stella Gitelman Willoughby\, and Alex Van Sant.

SUMMARY:Music Mondays presents Aryaloka String Quartet "Cycles of Stillness and Change"
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome the Aryaloka String Quartet (Mark Latham and Beth Welty\, violins\, Noralee Walker\, viola\, Sandi-Jo Malmon\, cello) back to Music Mondays to perform a thoughtful new program of string quartet music by the early 20th century French composer Maurice Ravel and three living composers: Arvo Pärt\, Caroline Shaw\, and Philip Glass. Their program will consist of “Summa” by Pärt\, “Entr’acte” by Shaw\, three movements from “Mishima” by Glass\, and the first two movements of Ravel’s only string quartet. These four pieces may seem wildly different and yet they are united in their exploration of tone\, color\, sensuality\, repeated motives\, stillness and energy. \nPlease join us in person at the Scandinavian Center\, 206 Waltham Street\, Newton\, or on Zoom at:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81963239351…\nMeeting ID: 819 6323 9351\nPasscode: mm2026 \nAs usual\, admission is free\, but donations are appreciated\, all of which will go directly to the musicians. We accept donations by cash or check to Music Mondays Inc. (at the concert or by mail– email musicmondaysnewton@gmail.com for mailing address)\, Venmo @Music-Mondays\, or Zelle to musicmondaysnewton@gmail.com. \nWe are grateful to the Newton Cultural Council\, a local council of the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, as well as Village Bank of Newton\, for their continued support\, without which we would not be able to present this concert.

SUMMARY:Newton Family Singers Presents Music of R.E.M. and the Indigo Girls!
DESCRIPTION:This season we’re celebrating the music of R.E.M. and Indigo Girls\, two decade-defining bands who came out of Athens\, Georgia. \nFun fact about Indigo Girls and R.E.M.: the trajectory of the Indigo Girls’ career mimics the path carved by R.E.M.\, often passing through the exact same physical spaces. Both bands’ spiritual home became the Athens clubs. The 40 Watt Club stands out as the central hub of their shared history. Even decades later\, in December 2022\, the Indigo Girls returned to the 40 Watt to perform at the 40th Anniversary celebration of R.E.M.’s Chronic Town EP\, cementing the venue as a historical monument to their shared lineage. Keep your eyes open around town for our flyer\, and see if you can pick out “40 Watt” imagery. \nMark your calendars: Saturday\, May 9 @ 4:00 PM. This season we’re performing at Newton Community Stage at the Lincoln-Eliot School\, 15 Walnut Park\, Newton. \nAdult tickets are $15 if purchased before May 2nd and $20 if purchased after May 2nd or at the door. Kids’ tickets (12 and under) are always $15. Get yours at https://www.newtonfamilysingers.org/events.html.
