SUMMARY:Zarzuela in Newton - A Hispanic Heritage Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Boston Opera & Zarzuela presents a classical lyric concert featuring solos and ensembles of the most well-known Zarzuelas of all time. \nZarzuela is a traditional Spanish musical genre that originated in the 17th century and has since evolved into a distinctive lyric form combining operatic\, theatrical\, and musical elements\, featuring a mix of sung and spoken parts. \nThe genre found its way to the Americas during the colonial period and subsequently experienced a notable expansion and adaptation. As Spanish culture took root in Latin America\, the genre merged with indigenous musical traditions\, creating a unique fusion that reflected the cultural diversity of the region. \nFeaturing international singers Alesandra Collins\, Michael Gonzalez\, Harry Otero\, and Lucia Panizza\, accompanied by Dr. Libor Dudas on the piano. \nAs a Hispanic led nonprofit organization\, it is part of Boston Opera & Zarzuela’s mission to share our musical heritage in Greater Boston. \nThis program is supported in part by a grant from the Newton Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

SUMMARY:Silent Movie Monday - "Snow White" (1916) with live harp-viola score
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate National Silent Movie Day with a showing of the vintage silent film “Snow White” (1916) at the nonprofit West Newton Cinema on Monday\, September 29 at 7 pm. The event boasts a magical live score accompaniment by harpist-composer Leslie McMichael and violist Barbara McMichael. Although there have been many film versions of this fairy tale\, this silent movie was the first and the silent picture actually inspired a teen Walt Disney to make his own animated feature decades later. Snow White is played by Marguerite Clark in one of her few surviving film performances from the silent film era. The runtime of the vintage film with live harp and viola accompaniment is 62 minutes. https://www.westnewtoncinema.com/movie/snow-white-1916

SUMMARY:Silent Movie Monday presents 1916 fairy tale "Snow White" with live harp-viola score
DESCRIPTION:The historic West Newton Cinema will celebrate Silent Movie Monday with a special live score screening of the 1916 silent film Snow White on Monday\, September 29 at 7 pm. \nThe vintage film was heroically rescued and preserved for future generations just a few years ago\, and the parallels between the restored silent motion picture and the preservation of West Newton’s own beloved movie house are striking. \nLike all silent movies\, Snow White was made on flammable nitrate film stock\, and for many years\, it was rumored to have been destroyed in a vault fire. But a single theatrical print was discovered in the Netherlands in 1992\, and an amazing restoration was done by the George Eastman House film archive. \nThe whimsical silent fantasy returns to the big screen of a movie theater which was rescued itself just last summer. Through the mighty efforts of the West Newton Cinema Foundation and passionate support of local film lovers\, the 90-year-old venue has re-emerged as a vital cultural gathering place. The foundation now owns the building and is continuing its campaign to revitalize its Art Deco charm\, as well as provide a range of lively cinema storytelling for the public. \nCome experience the magic of movies with a silent fairy tale from the dawn of cinema accompanied by a live harp and viola score from Leslie McMichael\, harpist-composer\, and her sister Barbara McMichael\, viola. \nMcMichael enthuses\, “It’s thrilling to play live and pair the visuals of film with my music. With every performance\, we get to use our instruments to underscore the expressive acting so typical of the silent era – very fun!” \nFor advance tickets to the Snow White film screening with live harp and viola accompaniment\, visit https://www.westnewtoncinema.com/movie/snow-white-1916 General admission is $20 with discounts offered for students and teachers. West Newton Cinema is located at 1296 Washington Street\, West Newton\, MA.

SUMMARY:Explorations in Sound
DESCRIPTION:Gabriela Martina and Maxim Lubarsky have collaborated musically since 2009 and officially formed their duo in 2019. Their project\, Explorations in Sound\, blends spontaneous composition\, deep improvisation\, and genre-defying creativity\, drawing from sources like poetry\, melodic fragments\, and reimagined pop\, soul\, and jazz. Using voice\, piano\, and unconventional sounds\, they create a dynamic musical dialogue rooted in deep listening and real-time exchange. Each performance is a unique\, imaginative journey where the audience becomes part of the creation process\, witnessing music born in the moment—raw\, genuine\, and ever-evolving.

DESCRIPTION:“Sophie et Adam” is a duo inspired by the many singing traditions they have crossed paths with on their musical journey. Pub Songs from England\, Cabaret chansons from 1940s Paris\, 18th century Sacred Harp singing\, Milongas from Argentina\, Scottish Ballads\, and Sing-Songwriter repertoire from Chile… Regardless of the origin or the time period\, Sophie Michaux and Adam Jacob Simon share music that moves them with their audiences. Individually they collaborate musically with some of the most vibrant ensembles in New England: The Boston Symphony Orchestra\, Boston Early Music Festival\, The Lorelei Ensemble\, A Far Cry\, Blue Heron\, Harvard University\, the Trinity Church of Boston\, etc. But as a duo\, they create a warm and intimate moment in which time stops\, and music from around the world speaks.\nJoin us in person at the Scandinavian Living Center\, Nordic Hall\, 206 Waltham Street\, Newton or via Zoom:\nZoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84497750789?pwd=uHTINb0az9IX6tO7g02mpCgaaJAVRQ.1\nMeeting ID: 844 9775 0789\nPasscode: mm2025 \nThis concert is supported in part by the Newton Cultural Council\, a local council that is supported by the Mass Cultural Council and the City of Newton. We are grateful to Village Bank of Newton for their continued support of our series.

SUMMARY:Sing & Play with Newton Folk Music
DESCRIPTION:Join Newton Folk Music at the Newton Free Library to sing and play a wide range of folk music\, from traditional to contemporary\, in a low-key\, warm\, and friendly environment. \nSingers and instrumentalists of all levels are welcome. Going around the circle\, everyone will have the chance to suggest a song—and usually to lead it. You can always pass\, of course\, and the organizers are here to help. \nPrinted songbooks with selected favorites will be provided for participants to use during the session\, or you can bring a tablet to reference an electronic version. Newton Folk Music also sometimes uses the book Rise Up Singing as a source\, especially for simple 3-chord tunes\, so bring that along if you have a copy. For less familiar or more complex songs not in our songbook\, the group likes to play from paper handouts. \nThis program is geared towards adults. If you have any questions\, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the organizers at events@newtonfolk.org.
