This talk traces the origins of the Chinese presence in the region and examines their experiences from the early years of the United States\, through the Chinese Exclusion Era (1882–1943)\, to the recent decades that have witnessed the community’s significant growth across Greater Boston\, as well as the many challenges it continues to face. \nAbout the speaker: Lisong Liu is professor of history at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. SUMMARY:SHINE mural project
DESCRIPTION:SHINE Mural project for Newton middle and high school artists \nNewton Community Events & Programs (formerly Newton Cultural Development) is once again offering student artists a chance to “shine” through our SHINE mural project. The full details are on our website here\, and here are the important bullet points: \n– Artists paint a 6’x3′ plywood panel that is later placed at a highly visible outdoor location in Newton\n– They are professional public artists on this project\, earning a stipend of $200 (to include their purchase of paint supplies)\n– The murals must represent their interpretation of the theme: America at 250\n– The link to apply is here and the deadline to apply is this Friday\, February 27 (samples needed by the following Friday) \nThe students who have participated in this project the last three years have offered very different perspectives on our SHINE theme\, all of them well thought out and wonderfully executed. The students gain great experience planning and implementing a public art project and working on schedule.

SUMMARY:Newton History Series: The Troubled History of Race and Public Education in Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:Many of us learn about school desegregation in the context of the mid-twentieth-century South: Brown v. Board of Education\, Ruby Bridges\, and the Little Rock Nine. Yet a century before that\, young Black women in Massachusetts led the fight for equal school rights—the right of all to a quality education on an equal basis. This lecture examines the lives of young Black women whose activism reshaped public education in the Bay State. Exploring this history is vital\, not only to spotlight the long struggle for Black educational justice\, but also to remind us of our collective obligation to democratize public schools today. \nAbout the speaker: Kabria Baumgartner is an award-winning historian who has worked with numerous historical organizations. In 2021\, she co-founded the award-winning Newburyport Black History Initiative (NBHI)\, an organization that highlights and incorporates Black history into the public landscape in downtown Newburyport. In 2019\, she published her first academic book\, In Pursuit of Knowledge: Black Women and Educational Activism in Antebellum America\, which tells the story of young Black women who fought to democratize public education in the nineteenth-century North. She is Dean’s Associate Professor of History and Africana Studies at Northeastern University. \nThis program is part of the Newton History Series\, co-sponsored by Historic Newton and the Newton Free Library. \nRegistration is encouraged\, and you’ll get a reminder if you sign up. Walk-ins are also welcome.

SUMMARY:Holocaust Remembrance Day. Exhibition and Film Screening.
DESCRIPTION:Screening of the documentary film The Lost Brothers\, Israel.\nAn exhibition of graphic art\, photographs\, and wood inlay work.\nArtworks by Alexander Gassel\, Andrey Gagarin\, and Mikhail Faktorovich. \nArt About the Holocaust \nAlexander Gassel is a Russian-American artist and designer. Blending the avant-garde with traditional Russian iconography and combining ancient symbols with contemporary subjects\, Gassel creates surrealist works that reflect his cultural heritage alongside his experience of life in America. \nAlexander Gassel uses ancient techniques employed in the creation of icon paintings. He paints with egg yolk tempera\, making his own color pigments by grinding natural stones and minerals\, such as malachite\, cinnabar\, or lapis into powder\, which he then mixes with egg yolk. The artist often applies gold or silver leaf on the paintings. Blending the avant-garde with traditional Russian iconography\, combining ancient symbols with contemporary subjects\, Gassel creates surrealist works that reflect his cultural heritage alongside his experience of life in America. \nLearn more about Alexander Gassel and his works at https://alexandergassel.com \nAndrey Gagarin \nI am a 74-year-old psychiatrist with no formal photographic education\, but I have been making photographs since the age of twelve. My work arises from observation rather than instruction — from standing still\, listening\, and looking carefully at the world in front of me. \nThe image of Birkenau was taken six years ago using infrared optics. I chose infrared not for effect\, but because it reveals what ordinary sight cannot: the quiet trace of time\, the way memory lingers in light long after people have disappeared. For me\, this photograph is not a document of a place\, but an encounter with history — a way of seeing underlying presence and absence at the same moment. \nPhotography\, like psychiatry\, is an act of attention. It asks you to stay\, to witness\, and to hold what is often difficult to hold. This is what I try to do with my images. \nMichael Farro (Mikhail Faktorovich) — Marquetry \nhttps://michaelfarro.art \nMichael Farro was born in Bobruisk\, Belarus. He studied at MIIT in Moscow and earned a Ph.D. in Economics. Michael works as a computer programmer and has taught computer science at Boston University. In parallel with his technical career\, he pursues marquetry — creating narrative wood veneer panels that explore memory\, history\, and human experience. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife.

SUMMARY:Among Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:2026 Special Event DCP with Filmmaker Q&A intended for screenings on or around International Holocaust Remembrance Day | January 27\, 2026 \nABOUT THE SPECIAL EVENT\nThe Special Event Q&A includes a brief pre-recorded introduction by filmmaker Yoav Potash\, and an in-depth post-film Q&A compilation that reveals the fascinating making-of stories –– as well as the ongoing controversy –– behind this critically-acclaimed film. The Q&A compilation was filmed live at sold-out screenings in New York\, Los Angeles\, and the San Francisco Bay Area\, lending a special event feel to the content. \nFILM SYNOPSIS\nUsing beautiful hand-drawn animation to bring the past to life\, “Among Neighbors” investigates the story of a small\, rural town where the longstanding peace between Jewish and Polish neighbors was shattered by World War II. Now\, in an era where difficult truths about the past are being silenced for political gain\, the film focuses on the only living Holocaust survivor from the town\, and an aging eyewitness who saw Jews murdered there – six months after the Nazis were defeated. Produced and directed by award-winning filmmaker Yoav Potash (“Crime After Crime\,” Sundance Film Festival)\, “Among Neighbors” is an evocative and heart-pounding murder mystery with urgent political relevance.

SUMMARY:Newton History Series: Land as Archive in the Native Northeast
DESCRIPTION:Since the time of first interactions between English settlers and the Native peoples of the Dawnland\, the settler colonial project has focused on the continued dispossession of Indigenous homelands. Early land deed or transfer documents drawn up between settlers and Narragansett\, Nipmuc\, Wampanoag\, Pequot and other tribal representatives\, before and after King Philip’s War (1675-76)\, represent just one of the audacious forms of dispossession enacted by settlers across the Native Northeast. This talk will explore the imposition\, impacts\, and legacies of these 17th century documents\, and the lives and experiences of the Native people who signed them. \nAbout the speaker: Kimberly Toney is an enrolled member of the Hassanamisco Band of Nipmuc\, and is the Inaugural Coordinating Curator of Native American and Indigenous Collections\, jointly appointed to the John Carter Brown and John Hay Libraries at Brown University. Kim has worked in special collections libraries for more than 15 years\, including as Head of Readers’ Services and Director of Indigenous Initiatives at the American Antiquarian Society on Nipmuc homelands in Worcester\, Massachusetts. Kim is Co-Chair of the newly formed Nipmuc Community Land Project\, and regularly serves as a consultant to cultural heritage institutions across southern New England. Her own research and personal interests include language and cultural reclamation\, the intersections of Black and Indigenous histories in the Northeast\, connecting Indigenous knowledges and practices to scholarly endeavors\, and land back. \nThis program is part of the Newton History Series\, co-sponsored by Historic Newton and the Newton Free Library. \nRegistration is encouraged\, and you’ll get a reminder if you sign up. SUMMARY:Producers Circle: Nine
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening with filmmakers Jeremy S. Levine and Rachael DeCruz as they share a rough cut and discuss the making of their documentary\, “Nine”. \nIn this contemplative\, immersive documentary\, we see two men’s parallel lives unfold\, separated by generations and bound together by experience. In Act I\, Nine interweaves the lives of Gerald and Henry. They are both stuck. Henry’s life in prison is on loop; he works as a janitor\, calls his wife Juanita—who stayed with him during his decades of incarceration—and mentors the younger men while playing dominos before starting it all over again the next day. Gerald frantically juggles his day job\, his activism\, and at night\, he digs into the archives of Henry’s case\, looking for something—anything—that will help bring his Pops home. Act II centers on Gerald’s campaign to free Henry. Gerald and his team of formerly incarcerated activists strategize on ways to bring Henry home. They work to pass a bill Gerald wrote while still in prison that would radically transform the clemency board. Gerald records emotional video testimonies from men whose lives Henry transformed. He’s worried it’s not enough and that he’s failing Henry. Things come to a head in Act III\, leading to Henry’s clemency hearing and his unexpected freedom after 45 years of incarceration. \nWith quiet attention to details\, Nine feels like a cinematic poem. In moments small and large\, the film builds a beautiful\, lyrical world that explores the resilience and joy that can be found in our most cherished relationships. \nJeremy S. Levine\, Director/Producer\nLevine’s work explores race\, class\, and the power of parental bonds through cinematic\, formally rigorous films. \nRachael DeCruz\, Director/Producer\nDeCruz’s work centers on how familial and community bonds fortify people to push back against racist systems. \nProducer’s Circle is an opportunity to:\nExperience excerpts of a filmmaker’s past work to understand their vision and craftsmanship.\n-Engage directly with in-progress productions that need your support.\n-Participate in shaping the final stages of a film’s journey\, through discussion and financial contributions.\n-Foster a Vibrant Film Community. Beyond supporting a single documentary\, your participation helps strengthen Boston’s larger documentary scene. By investing in these works-in-progress\, you become part of a community pushing the boundaries of independent storytelling\, inspiring future filmmakers\, and expanding the city’s creative horizons.

SUMMARY:Newton Conservators Webinar: Fish\, the Missing Link in Suburban/Urban Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Newton Highlands in the 1960s and 70s\, Bob Mallard was fascinated with the network of streams near his home. These streams wove their way through Cold Spring Park\, Newton Cemetery\, Newton Free Library\, Newton City Hall\, and Albemarle Park\, behind houses and businesses and under roads\, parking lots\, schools\, and playgrounds. He learned to connect the subterranean and above ground\, or daylighted\, sections of stream by exploring\, peering into storm drains\, and studying maps. These streams have been straightened\, dredged\, moved\, walled in\, and buried. They are subject to municipal stormwater inputs as well as other pollution. But there is still life in these heavily manipulated and often overlooked waters\, including fish. Bob will discuss the importance of native fish\, the impact of nonnative fish\, as well as what the Native Fish Coalition has learned about Cold Spring Brook and Cheesecake Brook. \nBob Mallard was born and raised on Lake Avenue in Newton Highlands. A lifelong angler\, he owned and operated a fly-fishing shop in Maine for 15 years after retiring from high tech. Bob has written hundreds of articles on fish and fishing\, as well as five nationally distributed fly-fishing books. In 2017\, Bob helped found Native Fish Coalition of Maine. Today\, NFC boasts 21 state chapters from Maine to Arkansas\, including Massachusetts\, and northwest to Wisconsin\, with Bob serving as the Executive Director. \nSign up: https://shorturl.at/0Cq8z
