SUMMARY:Greening Newton Houses of Worship: Challenges Facing Newton Town Trees in a Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:Challenges Facing Newton Town Trees in a Changing Climate”\nWilliam Moomaw and Gil Rodgers\, Minerva Action Group\, LLC \nUnion Church\, Newton\, MA\, Saturday\, October 24\, 2026\, 7 PM \n“Have you hugged your tree today?” Drs. Moomaw and Rodgers will discuss the importance of Newton’s town trees and how in the changing climate we are experiencing this will affect their sustainability and growth. The Minerva Action Group is an independent organization of individuals with interest and expertise in climate issues and particularly in trees and woodlands. It has created and conducted exercises for students\, government officials\, and town’s people to understand the role of trees in capturing and sequestering carbon\, providing regional cooling and reducing flooding by evaporating water from their leaves. The discussion will suggest how to improve the management of town trees to track these changes and alter practices. There will time for informal discussion and light refreshments following the program” \nCo-sponsored by Union Church\, Green Newton\, FUUSN Climate Action Team\, SHOL Care Creation Team

SUMMARY:Island of Hope: A Master Plan for Newton Community Farm
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered why Newton Community Farm looks the way it does? Or how is it possible that a 2.25-acre farm can provide produce to an 80-share summer CSA\, a 50-share late fall CSA\, farm stand\, farmers’ market\, and food pantry donations\, all while offering educational programs? \nMuch of the Farm’s layout today owes directly to the Master Plan for the Farm\, created by founding board member Ted Chapman. Building on principles from biointensive agriculture and permaculture\, Ted created a vision for the Farm becoming the center of a renaissance of “gardening” in the “Garden City.” Come spend an evening with Ted and Farmer Greg\, learning about this early vision for the Farm\, and how the Farm today both follows and departs from it.

SUMMARY:Behind the Screen: La Bola Negra
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE FILM\nLA BOLA NEGRA\, the bold new film from Spanish writer-directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi\, won the Best Director award at Cannes and the People’s Choice award at the Toronto International Film Festival. Inspired by the surviving pages of an unfinished play by Federico García Lorca and by Alberto Conejero’s award-winning play La piedra oscura\, the film tells the interconnected stories of three gay men in Spain in 1932\, 1937\, and 2017. Moving from the years before the Spanish Civil War\, through the war itself\, to the present day\, LA BOLA NEGRA is a sweeping\, passionate triptych about desire\, repression\, historical memory\, and what one generation carries forward to the next. \nPANEL DISCUSSION FOLLOWS\nOur panel will explore the film’s roots in Lorca’s work\, its portrayal of the Spanish Civil War and the Franco era\, and how it brings queer history and historical memory to the screen. \nCARLOS RAMOS\nMargaret E. Deffenbaugh and LeRoy T. Carlson Professor in Comparative Literary Studies and Professor of Spanish\, Wellesley College\nCarlos Ramos’s teaching and research focus on the literature and cultural history of contemporary Spain. His published work includes Construyendo la modernidad: Escritura y arquitectura en el Madrid moderno (1918-1937) and Poesía insomne. \nWAN SONYA TANG\nAssociate Professor of Hispanic Studies\, Boston College\nWan Sonya Tang teaches courses on Spanish literature and culture from the nineteenth century onward. She is the author of Specters\, Monsters\, and the Damned: Fantastic Threats to the Social Order in 19th-Century Spain and co-editor of Televising Restoration Spain\, which examines how heritage film and television explore Spain’s relationship to modernity in the late 1800s and early 1900s. \nModerator:\nFERNANDO ROSENBERG\nProfessor of Hispanic Studies and Comparative Literature\, Brandeis University\nFernando Rosenberg is the author of After Human Rights: Literature\, Visual Arts\, and Film in Latin America\, 1990-2010.

SUMMARY:Newton Conversations about Schools: Let's Talk!
DESCRIPTION:Conversations in Newton can get… complicated. Whether the topic is school budgets\, village identity\, or parking policy\, our public discussions can sometimes become more combative than constructive. \nWe believe there’s a better way for us to work together. Please join us for a constructive dialogue with neighbors interested in exploring the following topic: \nPersonal and community investment in education \nThis dialogue brings together community members with different points of view on how Newton invests in the education of young people. The purpose is for folks to speak to be understood\, to listen to understand\, and to deepen curiosity about perspectives (of your own and others) — on a concrete issue that affects us all. \nWhat is Newton Conversations?\nWe are a group of Newton residents\, City staff\, and elected officials who came together around a shared vision: \nNewton Conversations envision a city where civil discourse thrives\, and diverse perspectives are respected with open minds and thoughtful engagement. Together\, we’ll co-create a space for reflection\, honesty\, and mutual respect. \nOur hope is that you walk away with the sense that respectful conversation is still possible — and essential — in Newton. \nHave questions? SUMMARY:Riverdogs & The Same River Twice
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE FILMS\nIn 1978 Robb Moss filmed a group of friends\, young river guides\, on a 35-day rafting trip through the Grand Canyon\, and he has kept filming them ever since. \nTHE SAME RIVER TWICE (2003\, 78 min.) catches up with five of those friends\, Barry\, Cathy\, Danny\, Jeff and Jim\, twenty years later. Two have served as mayors and one as a county commissioner\, and all five are weighing the free lives they once led against the ones they have built. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. \nRIVERDOGS (1982\, 32 min.) is Moss’s original record of that summer on the Colorado River\, a lyrical and unselfconscious portrait of youth and the canyon. RIVERDOGS contains nudity.

SUMMARY:Behind the Screen: Once Upon A Time In Harlem
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE FILM\nONCE UPON A TIME IN HARLEM captures an extraordinary evening in 1972\, when pioneering documentarian William Greaves gathered surviving luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance at Duke Ellington’s Harlem townhouse. Over four hours\, artists\, writers\, and intellectuals\, many of whom had not seen one another in fifty years\, reminisced\, argued\, laughed\, and debated their place in a rapidly changing cultural landscape. Greaves considered it the most important event he ever filmed. Decades later\, his son David Greaves\, one of the original camera operators\, restored the 16mm footage and completed the film\, creating both a vivid time capsule and a searching inquiry into one of the most creative periods in American history. \nPANEL DISCUSSION FOLLOWS\nOur panelists will discuss the Harlem Renaissance and its legacy\, the remarkable figures gathered in Greaves’s footage\, and the story of how this film was made and\, fifty years later\, finally completed. \nKENDRA FIELD\nAssociate Professor of History and Director of the Center for Public History\, Tufts University\nKendra Field is Associate Professor of History and Director of the Center for Public History at Tufts University. SUMMARY:Musical Matinee: Kiss Me Kate
DESCRIPTION:Two formerly married actors (Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel) are forced back into contact with each other when they’re cast in a production of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Will their history completely derail the show\, or will they find a way to put their differences aside until\, at least\, opening night? Or could they even start to like each other again? A bright technicolor confection\, Kiss Me Kate brings The Taming of the Shrew into the age of the MGM musical\, complete with music by the one and only Cole Porter. This film brings laughs a-plenty\, with gorgeous sets and costumes—and keep your eyes peeled for a young Bob Fosse in one of his first screen roles!
