SUMMARY:Artist Talk: The Memory Quilt
DESCRIPTION:Join Newton Cemetery & Arboretum’s 2025-26 Artist-in-Residence Kasey Kaufman for a talk on her Memory Quilt Project\, an evolving series of mixed-media works composed of intimate “memory tiles” built from fragments—images of nature\, place\, objects\, handwriting\, and absence—layered together the way memory itself is formed: imperfectly\, emotionally\, and over time. \nInspired by the cemetery’s history and landscape—and by stories shared by families remembering loved ones buried there—the work reflects themes of grief\, connection\, love\, and remembrance\, and considers what remains after loss. Kasey will share images from the project\, discuss her process and research\, and reflect on how personal and collective memory shape the pieces. \nBefore becoming a full-time artist\, Kaufman spent more than two decades as an award-winning television journalist at WBZ-TV. She now explores storytelling through paint\, texture\, and collage\, exhibits throughout the East Coast\, and is a member of the Copley Society of Art. \nParking is available in the parking lot next to the chapel.\nRegister in advance ~ Space is limited.\nDonations gratefully accepted! Suggested donation: $15

SUMMARY:Workshop: Build your own self-watering veggie planter!
DESCRIPTION:At Fulfilled Goods\, we are all about reusing and repurposing existing materials vs. tossing them in a landfill. Many of the products we stock in our refillery come to us in 5 gallon buckets. We usually send the empties back to our closed-loop partners to clean and reuse. But when we heard about global buckets – a self-watering planter made from 5 gallon buckets – we were so excited by the idea that we wanted to try it out! \nJoin us and Farmer Tim (our CSA partner*) as he demonstrates how to build a global bucket. We’ll provide all the supplies you need including composted soil courtesy of Black Earth Composting. Farmer Tim will be bringing a variety of tomato\, pepper and eggplant plants from his greenhouse for you to choose from. So you’ll go home with your own self-watering planter ready to go! (or rather\, ready to GROW! ) \nDate and Time: Tuesday June 9\, 6:30pm\nWorkshop cost: $35

SUMMARY:Webinar on "Nature for Newton: Learnings from Initial Restoration Efforts in Newton’s Central and Largest Park"
DESCRIPTION:Newton Conservators will host a webinar on “Nature for Newton: Learnings from Initial Restoration Efforts in Newton’s Central and Largest Park” (https://newtonconservators.org/events/webinar-nature-for-newton-learnings-from-initial-restoration-efforts-in-newtons-central-and-largest-park/) at 7:00 pm on Thursday\, June 4. Sign up: https://shorturl.at/k5BIx. \nClimate change can already feel overwhelming\, and now we have a biodiversity crisis\, too? Can local conservation in our own parks and yards make a real difference in protecting wildlife\, strengthening forest health\, slowing climate change\, and improving nature’s ability to adapt? Using Cold Spring Park restoration efforts as a case study\, we will highlight what we are learning from new and ongoing projects to restore native ecosystems and avoid catastrophic ecological tipping points. \nJoin us to learn why acting locally matters\, what’s working\, how you can apply this information in your own yard\, and how we can create a model for building community to ensure healthy and vibrant natural areas for our wildlife\, ourselves\, and future generations. \nThis webinar will feature three presenters: \n-Alan Nogee\, President\, Friends of Cold Spring Park and Newton Conservators Board Member \n-Zach Shein has worked for Parterre Ecological and the Arnold Arboretum and did much of the research for the Natural Resource and Biodiversity Management Plan \n-Dr. Jon Regosin\, former Deputy Director of Massachusetts Fish & Wildlife and Newton Conservators’ Board Member

SUMMARY:West Newton Cinema Reads: Perrotta & Phillips
DESCRIPTION:West Newton Cinema Reads & Newtonville Books present: \nTom Perrotta\, author of The Leftovers\, Little Children\, and Election\, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jayne Anne Phillips reading from\, discussing\, and signing copies of their new books\, Ghost Town and Small Town Girls\, followed by a screening of The Last Picture Show. \nTom Perrotta’s new novel\, Ghost Town\, is a gripping and darkly nostalgic tale about a tumultuous summer in 1970s suburban New Jersey\, told from the perspective of a middle-aged writer looking back on events that changed his life—and the story he finally has the courage to tell. Ghost Town reveals the way our ghosts are always with us\, even when we think we’ve left them behind. \nSmall Town Girls is Oprah’s #1 most anticipated book of 2026. Part coming-of-age story\, part social history\, this tender\, sparkling memoir is Jayne Anne Phillips’s love letter to the place and the people who have shaped her perceptions and her writing. Phillips grew up in Buckhannon\, West Virginia—dense with forests and small churches\, rich in history and misunderstandings. In her singular voice\, Phillips re-creates the place she calls home and reflects on her origins\, the mysteries of memory\, and the troubled annals of the last American centuries. \nAnd in Peter Bogdonavich’s The Last Picture Show (1971)\, adapted from Larry McMurtry’s novel\, we experience an aching portrait of a dying West. Set in Texas in the early fifties\, The Last Picture Show portrays the daily shuffles of three futureless teens—enigmatic Sonny (Timothy Bottoms)\, wayward jock Duane (Jeff Bridges)\, and rich rebel Jacy (Cybill Shepherd)—and the aging\, lost souls who bump up against them. Shot in arresting black-and-white\, this hushed depiction of crumbling American values remains a pivotal film (Criterion). \nOur event will begin with a reading and conversation between the authors in our first-floor Cinema 2\, followed by an audience Q&A and book signing in our lobby\, with books for sale courtesy of Newtonville Books. We will then return to Cinema 2 to watch The Last Picture Show. \nPANEL DISCUSSION \nTOM PERROTTA\nTom Perrotta is the author of eleven works of fiction\, including Election and Little Children\, which were made into Oscar-nominated films\, and The Leftovers and Mrs. Fletcher\, which were adapted into acclaimed HBO series. \nJAYNE ANNE PHILLIPS\nJayne Anne Phillips is the author of Black Tickets\, Machine Dreams\, Fast Lanes\, Shelter\, MotherKind\, Lark and Termite\, Quiet Dell\, and Night Watch\, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Her work has been a finalist once for the National Book Award and twice for the National Book Critics Circle Award. The recipient of Guggenheim\, National Endowment for the Arts\, Howard\, Bunting\, and Rockefeller Foundation Fellowships\, she is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
