DESCRIPTION:Throughout the past century\, Hollywood movies have been a major force in embedding the notion of the American dream in our individual aspirations\, our public discourse\, and our collective consciousness. They have offered varied perspectives on this very essence of our national self-image—sometimes extolling and sometimes challenging the premises and promises of the dream. This film series will showcase a range of movies that explore both the hopes and betrayals of the American dream. Screenings will take place once a month on Thursdays at 4:00PM. DESCRIPTION:FUUSN’s Social Justice Speakers Task Force invites you to a discussion with Greg Maslowe\, the Manager of the Newton Community Farm\, and Prathyusha Dasari\, from Save Soil\, on Sunday\, March 1\, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at FUUSN\, Alliance Room -1326 Washington Street\, West Newton\, MA 02465.\nNewton Community Farm has been farmed continuously for over 350 years. Despite this long history of agricultural use\, the farm’s soil is a thriving biome with high levels of organic matter. Our goal\, as the current users of this land\, is to ensure that it will remain fertile and productive for future generations and a beneficial habitat for the abundant more-than-human life in this area. What techniques does NCF use to ensure these goals? How do these relate to contemporary notions such as regenerative agriculture? And what can you do to enhance the soil health of your own home or garden?\nPrathyusha Dasari\, a volunteer with the Save Soil movement\, will introduce this global initiative dedicated to addressing the growing soil crisis. Save Soil unites people around the world to advocate for soil health and supports leaders of all nations in advancing policies that increase organic matter in agricultural soils. Agricultural soil degradation contributes to an estimated 40% of global warming\, and by 2045\, we may face 40% less food to sustain a projected population of 9.2 billion people. What is the current state of soil worldwide? What has Save Soil accomplished so far—and what can you do to help? DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE FILM:\nA coach with a checkered past and a local drunk train a small town high school basketball team to become a top contender for the championship. \nPANEL DISCUSSION FOLLOWS \nBRAD STEVENS\nBrad Stevens is the President of Basketball Operations for the NBA’s Boston Celtics\, a position he has held since June 2021\, where he built the 2024 NBA championship team. A former standout college coach at Butler University—leading them to two consecutive NCAA Championship games in 2010 and 2011—he previously served as the Celtics’ head coach for eight seasons (2013–2021). \nDAN SHAUGHNESSY\nDan Shaughnessy is a sports columnist and associate editor at the Boston Globe. He has been named Massachusetts Sportswriter of the Year 14 times and 12 times has been voted one of America’s top ten sports columnists by the Associated Press Sports Editors. In 2016 Shaughnessy was the recipient of the BBWAA Career Excellence Award for “meritorious contributions to baseball writing\,” presented at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown\, New York. Shaughnessy has written thirteen books\, including New York Times bestseller “Francona\,” “The Curse of the Bambino\,” and “Senior Year.” He most recently wrote “Wish It Lasted Forever — Life With The Larry Bird Celtics”\, a book about his days covering the 1980s Bird Celtics.
