DESCRIPTION:FUUSN’s Social Justice Speakers Task Force invites you to a discussion with Greg Maslowe\, the Manager of the Newton Community Farm\, and Prathyusha Dasari\, from Save Soil\, on Sunday\, March 1\, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at FUUSN\, Alliance Room -1326 Washington Street\, West Newton\, MA 02465.\nNewton Community Farm has been farmed continuously for over 350 years. Despite this long history of agricultural use\, the farm’s soil is a thriving biome with high levels of organic matter. Our goal\, as the current users of this land\, is to ensure that it will remain fertile and productive for future generations and a beneficial habitat for the abundant more-than-human life in this area. What techniques does NCF use to ensure these goals? How do these relate to contemporary notions such as regenerative agriculture? And what can you do to enhance the soil health of your own home or garden?\nPrathyusha Dasari\, a volunteer with the Save Soil movement\, will introduce this global initiative dedicated to addressing the growing soil crisis. Save Soil unites people around the world to advocate for soil health and supports leaders of all nations in advancing policies that increase organic matter in agricultural soils. A former standout college coach at Butler University—leading them to two consecutive NCAA Championship games in 2010 and 2011—he previously served as the Celtics’ head coach for eight seasons (2013–2021). \nDAN SHAUGHNESSY\nDan Shaughnessy is a sports columnist and associate editor at the Boston Globe. He has been named Massachusetts Sportswriter of the Year 14 times and 12 times has been voted one of America’s top ten sports columnists by the Associated Press Sports Editors. In 2016 Shaughnessy was the recipient of the BBWAA Career Excellence Award for “meritorious contributions to baseball writing\,” presented at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown\, New York. SUMMARY:Newton History Series: The Origins and Transformations of Chinese Communities in Boston
DESCRIPTION:When did Chinese migration to Boston begin? How did Boston’s Chinatown take shape\, and what is its current status? This talk traces the origins of the Chinese presence in the region and examines their experiences from the early years of the United States\, through the Chinese Exclusion Era (1882–1943)\, to the recent decades that have witnessed the community’s significant growth across Greater Boston\, as well as the many challenges it continues to face. \nAbout the speaker: Lisong Liu is professor of history at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. His teaching and research interests focus on Chinese migration\, Asian American history\, U.S.-China relations\, and world history. His monograph on Chinese student and professional migration was published in 2015 as part of Routledge’s “Chinese Worlds” series. His current book project is about the history of Chinese immigrants in Boston. He is an associate in research at the Harvard Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and also a member of the International Advisory Committee at the Chinese Heritage Center at Nanyang Technological University\, Singapore. \nThis program is part of the Newton History Series\, co-sponsored by Historic Newton and the Newton Free Library. \nRegistration is encouraged\, and you’ll get a reminder if you sign up. DESCRIPTION:NewTV’s Annual Membership Meeting will be held as a hybrid style meeting on Wednesday\, March 18 at 6:00pm. Members can choose to attend in person at the NewTV studio or via Zoom. Doors will open for our in-person attendees at 5:30PM; light refreshments\, networking\, and tours will be available immediately following the meeting. The meeting will include the approval of 2025 Annual Meeting Minutes\, departmental and financial reports\, and the election of two (2) candidate to the NewTV Board of Directors. \nMembers must be in good standing as of Wednesday\, February 25 at 6:00PM\, in order to be eligible to vote in the election. Due to the hybrid format of this meeting\, voting will be completed both with paper ballots for those attending in person\, as well as with an online form for those attending via Zoom. The online voting form will also be available to those unable to attend the meeting but who still wish to vote. Online voting will be available from Wednesday\, March 11 at 10:00AM through Tuesday\, March 17 at 6:00PM. Paper ballots will be distributed to in-person attendees upon their arrival. Voting will include the election of two board members and the approval of 2025 Annual Meeting minutes. \nOfficial invitations have been sent through both postal mail and email to active NewTV members in good standing. Zoom and online voting information will be sent upon RSVP to those who choose to attend virtually. DESCRIPTION:This is a story about a girl named Ursula. \nUrsula’s father wanted her to get married\, but Ursula had already devoted herself her true love; and\, this being the fourth century\, her true love was the Christian church. Instead of marrying\, she led a movement of thousands of young women to embrace their independence and choose to serve God instead of serving a husband. \nHildegard von Bingen – the “patron saint” of Cappella – wrote an abundance of vivid music and poetry about Saint Ursula. These chants celebrate womanhood and independence: women do not need anyone to “complete” them\, and they are “complete-in-themselves”. \nIn this program\, we present Hildegard’s music for Saint Ursula interspersed with micro-commissions from five emerging composers from the Boston area. These commissions will comment on and take their inspiration from the Hildegard chants. \nFeaturing music by: Hildegard von Bingen and up-and-coming local composers: Chloe DeSteno\, Natti Robinson\, Katie Semro\, Stella Gitelman Willoughby\, and Alex Van Sant.
