SUMMARY:SHINE mural project
DESCRIPTION:SHINE Mural project for Newton middle and high school artists \nNewton Community Events & Programs (formerly Newton Cultural Development) is once again offering student artists a chance to “shine” through our SHINE mural project. The full details are on our website here\, and here are the important bullet points: \n– Artists paint a 6’x3′ plywood panel that is later placed at a highly visible outdoor location in Newton\n– They are professional public artists on this project\, earning a stipend of $200 (to include their purchase of paint supplies)\n– The murals must represent their interpretation of the theme: America at 250\n– The link to apply is here and the deadline to apply is this Friday\, February 27 (samples needed by the following Friday) \nThe students who have participated in this project the last three years have offered very different perspectives on our SHINE theme\, all of them well thought out and wonderfully executed. The students gain great experience planning and implementing a public art project and working on schedule.

SUMMARY:Belmont World Film's 23rd Family Festival: Sunday\, January 18
DESCRIPTION:Parents with children ages 3–12 won’t want to miss Belmont World Film’s 23rd Family Festival. Guided by this year’s theme Lights\, Camera\, Magic!\, the festival showcases a diverse selection of films from around the world—many making their North American or U.S. premieres—offering young audiences an immersive and culturally rich cinematic experience. It’s a wonderful way to “travel the world” during MLK Weekend and beyond without the cost or hassle of a trip. \nThe festival takes place at the West Newton Cinema from January 17–18\, the Brattle Theatre on Monday\, January 19\, the Belmont Media Center on Saturday\, January 24\, and the Regent Theatre on Sunday\, January 25. \nThis year’s lineup includes mostly North American premieres\, with more than half of the films adapted from or inspired by classic and contemporary children’s books—a longstanding festival hallmark. For young readers and those who struggle with reading\, a professional voice-over will read subtitles aloud for films in languages other than English\, creating an experience much like story time. \nYour children can also engage in hands-on workshops–including Learn to the Draw the Minions and Hotel Transylvania Characters and Introduction to Storyboarding for Animated Films–with this year’s Artists-in-Residence\, story artist and director Dave Feiss and story artist and writer Paul McEvoy\, both of whom have most recently worked on The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants\, as well as the Minions and Hotel Transylvania franchises and many others. \nTo help maximize your children’s enjoyment of the festival\, we’ve created some age guidelines that you’ll also find marked on each film program or workshop. Children mature at different ages\, however\, and you know yours best. \nAge 3-8: These programs are limited to about an hour or so and are either wordless or in English.\nBilly the Cowboy Hamster\nThe Scarecrows’ Wedding/Tabby McTat\nWoozle & Pip: Adventure in the Magic Garden\nShort films for Age 3-8: Pet Projects \nAge 5-12+: Unleash your child’s creativity in this exciting workshop with this year’s Artists-in-Residence David Feiss and Paul McEvoy!\nLearn to Draw the Minions & Hotel Transylvania Characters: 10:30 AM\nLearn to Draw the Minions & Hotel Transylvania Characters: 3:30 PM \nAge 8+: These films require the ability to read subtitles\, although subtitles will be read aloud through headphones by a professional voice over\, much like having a story read aloud. SUMMARY:Silent Movie Monday presents 1916 fairy tale "Snow White" with live harp-viola score
DESCRIPTION:The historic West Newton Cinema will celebrate Silent Movie Monday with a special live score screening of the 1916 silent film Snow White on Monday\, September 29 at 7 pm. \nThe vintage film was heroically rescued and preserved for future generations just a few years ago\, and the parallels between the restored silent motion picture and the preservation of West Newton’s own beloved movie house are striking. \nLike all silent movies\, Snow White was made on flammable nitrate film stock\, and for many years\, it was rumored to have been destroyed in a vault fire. But a single theatrical print was discovered in the Netherlands in 1992\, and an amazing restoration was done by the George Eastman House film archive. \nThe whimsical silent fantasy returns to the big screen of a movie theater which was rescued itself just last summer. Through the mighty efforts of the West Newton Cinema Foundation and passionate support of local film lovers\, the 90-year-old venue has re-emerged as a vital cultural gathering place. The foundation now owns the building and is continuing its campaign to revitalize its Art Deco charm\, as well as provide a range of lively cinema storytelling for the public. \nCome experience the magic of movies with a silent fairy tale from the dawn of cinema accompanied by a live harp and viola score from Leslie McMichael\, harpist-composer\, and her sister Barbara McMichael\, viola. \nMcMichael enthuses\, “It’s thrilling to play live and pair the visuals of film with my music. With every performance\, we get to use our instruments to underscore the expressive acting so typical of the silent era – very fun!” \nFor advance tickets to the Snow White film screening with live harp and viola accompaniment\, visit https://www.westnewtoncinema.com/movie/snow-white-1916 General admission is $20 with discounts offered for students and teachers. West Newton Cinema is located at 1296 Washington Street\, West Newton\, MA.

SUMMARY:Silent Movie Monday - "Snow White" (1916) with live harp-viola score
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate National Silent Movie Day with a showing of the vintage silent film “Snow White” (1916) at the nonprofit West Newton Cinema on Monday\, September 29 at 7 pm. The event boasts a magical live score accompaniment by harpist-composer Leslie McMichael and violist Barbara McMichael. Although there have been many film versions of this fairy tale\, this silent movie was the first and the silent picture actually inspired a teen Walt Disney to make his own animated feature decades later. Snow White is played by Marguerite Clark in one of her few surviving film performances from the silent film era. The runtime of the vintage film with live harp and viola accompaniment is 62 minutes. https://www.westnewtoncinema.com/movie/snow-white-1916
